WhatsApp Introduces Four New Group Chat Features, Including Permanent Pinned Messages and Group Status

WhatsApp is rolling out four new group chat features, including permanent pinned messages, post-joining chat history sharing, Group Status updates, and a dedicated filter for mentions and replies.

WhatsApp has announced four new features aimed at making group chats easier to manage and helping users catch up on important conversations. The updates include permanent message pinning, the ability to share recent chat history with existing members, group-specific Status updates, and a new filter for unread mentions and replies.

WhatsApp Group Chat Gets Four New Features

One of the key additions is the option to pin messages indefinitely. Previously, users had to choose a time limit when pinning a message. With the new update, important messages can remain pinned without requiring users to set an expiry period.

WhatsApp is also expanding its message history sharing feature. Group admins and members can already choose to share recent messages when adding someone new to a group. Now, users can share recent chat history with someone even after they have joined. This can be done by tapping the person’s name in the group chat. WhatsApp says these messages remain end-to-end encrypted. Another addition is Group Status, which allows members to share Status updates specifically with people in a particular group. Everyone in the group can view, react to, and add their own updates. Like regular WhatsApp Status posts, these updates disappear after 24 hours.

The fourth feature is a new chat filter that highlights unread group conversations where users have been directly mentioned or received a reply. This also includes messages sent using the @all mention, helping users prioritise conversations that require their attention.

WhatsApp Highlights More Group Chat Features

Alongside the new additions, WhatsApp has highlighted several existing group chat tools. Users can privately reply to an individual member without taking the entire conversation off-topic. Poll creators can also disable multiple answers when they need a definitive response.

WhatsApp also offers member tags, allowing users to add context about their role or identity within a particular group. For instance, someone can identify themselves as a treasurer in a volunteer group or as a parent in a school group. The latest additions are aimed at making large and active group conversations easier to follow, while giving users more control over how they share updates and catch up on missed messages.
