Apple is set to launch the iPhone 15 Series in September, in its annual Fall Event. As per sources, the upcoming Apple Event is scheduled to be on September 13. Multiple renders have surfaced till now which show that the iPhone 15 Series will have a new design with thinner bezels. Supposedly, a dummy unit of the iPhone 15 Pro has been spotted with a USB Type-C port.

Tipster Ice Universe has tweeted some images of a dummy unit of the iPhone 15 Pro. The photos clearly show that the iPhone 15 Pro has a USB Type-C port for charging. However, it is unclear whether the dummy unit is genuine or not.

It is possible that the dummy unit was made by some case manufacturers, as companies usually get tips on the measurements of phones to keep accessories ready during the launch of the phone. However, Apple is known to be very secretive about its products, and hence this leak should be taken with a grain of salt.

The images also showcase a SIM card tray, which means that Apple could continue providing the option to use a physical SIM card in markets outside the US. The back panel design appears to be similar to the iPhone 14 Pro, with a similar triple camera setup.

Why the iPhone 15 Series Could Finally Get USB Type-C

In 2020, the European Union (EU) passed a mandate that all devices that have wired charging must feature a USB Type-C port. This law is set to be enforced from Autumn 2024. However, Apple might look to enter the transition early so they get enough time to overcome any other hurdles before the deadline.

Apple has already moved to USB Type-C with its iPads. According to some tips received by 9to5Mac, the upcoming AirPods Pro could also feature a USB Type-C port.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, has also reported that Apple is looking to move from lightning to USB Type-C on a majority of its products. While the regulations imposed by the EU are a strong push, Apple also realizes the potential of USB Type-C.

Apple’s lightning port is similar to USB 2.0 with max speeds of just 480 Mbps. In contrast, the USB Type-C port supports the latest USB 4.0 standards with maximum speeds of up to 40Gbps. USB Type-C is potentially 80 times faster than the lightning port.

Apple has already squeezed enough from the lightning port via royalties and licensing fees. However, the lightning port was introduced in 2012, making it a decade-old technology. Even if Apple managed to upgrade the lightning port, the company realizes that USB Type-C regulations are coming at them faster than ever.
