iQOO has officially dropped the mic on its next big release for the Indian market. Mark your calendars for February 24, because that is when the iQOO 15R is set to make its debut. This isn’t just another phone launch; it marks the introduction of the first “R”-branded device in iQOO’s flagship lineup, signalling a shift in how the brand categorises its performance monsters. The news came straight from the top, with iQOO India CEO Nipun Marya teasing the device on X (formerly Twitter) and giving us our first real look at what is coming.
If you were worried about iQOO straying too far from its roots, the teaser image should put those fears to rest. The 15R sports a sophisticated dual-tone grey back panel featuring a subtle checkered pattern – a look that feels both industrial and premium. It keeps the family resemblance strong, borrowing the square camera island design from the standard iQOO 15. The LED flash sits neatly outside the module, keeping things symmetrical and clean. It’s a design language that says, “I’m part of the flagship family,” but the unique texture gives the 15R its own distinct personality.
Here is where things get serious. iQOO has confirmed that the 15R will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Let that sink in for a second. We are talking about Qualcomm’s latest and greatest silicon – the kind usually reserved for the most expensive “Ultra” or “Pro” models – sitting inside a device that is positioned as a more accessible entry point. This is a massive, aggressive move. It suggests that iQOO isn’t watering down performance for the “R” series; instead, they are bridging the gap between their mid-range Neo series and the top-tier iQOO 15 Pro. For gamers and power users, this is the dream scenario: top-shelf horsepower without the top-shelf price tag.
Rumours are swirling – backed by reports from The Economic Times – that the iQOO 15R might essentially be a rebranded version of the iQOO Z11 Turbo, a performance beast currently exclusive to China. This makes a lot of sense. The Z-series Turbo models are known for packing high-end hardware into affordable chassis, and the design similarities (especially that floating camera island and the flat frame) are hard to ignore.
If this theory holds water, we are in for a treat with the specs. We are likely looking at a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a buttery smooth 144Hz refresh rate. That extra refresh rate headroom (over the standard 120Hz) is a love letter to competitive mobile gamers who need every millisecond of responsiveness they can get.
Perhaps the most important spec on the rumoured sheet is the battery. If the 15R is indeed the Z11 Turbo in disguise, it could pack a massive 7,600mAh battery. In a world where 5,000mAh is the standard, this is absolutely gargantuan. Yet, somehow, iQOO seems to have engineered this into a frame that is only 7.9mm thick and weighs around 202g. Combined with 100W fast charging, this phone could effectively end battery anxiety for even the heaviest users. You could game for hours, stream 4K video, and likely still have juice left over for the next day.
On the optics front, iQOO seems to be prioritising the main shooter. The leaks point to a 200MP primary sensor, paired with a modest 8MP ultra-wide. It’s a classic “performance phone” camera setup: give you one incredible lens for 90% of your shots, and save costs on the auxiliary ones. Up front, a 32MP selfie camera should handle video calls and social media duties just fine.
Running the show will be OriginOS 6, based on Android 16. This indicates iQOO is serious about software longevity and refinement, aligning with the industry trend of offering smoother animations and smarter, AI-integrated features right out of the box.
Should you buy it?
The iQOO 15R is shaping up to be a disruptor. By pairing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 with a massive battery and a high-refresh screen, iQOO is clearly targeting the enthusiast crowd – people who care more about frame rates and screen-on time than 100x zoom periscopes. If they can price this aggressively, rivals like the OnePlus 12R and the Realme GT series are going to have a very tough fight on their hands. Come February 24, we will find out if the price is as attractive as the specs.
