OnePlus has officially confirmed that its future smartphones will ship with Oppo’s ColorOS user interface. This confirms the viral speculations that OxygenOS will no longer be the standalone software experience that has been synonymous with the brand for over a decade.
Rumours and speculations about OnePlus' software roadmap and future have been circulating for months now. While the company has now confirmed the transition, it has not shared details about when the change will take effect or which devices will be the first to run ColorOS.
OxygenOS to make way for ColorOS
Since the launch of the original OnePlus One in 2014, OxygenOS has been one of the brand's biggest differentiators. It has earned a loyal following for its clean interface, near-stock Android experience, and minimal bloatware.
The latest announcement marks the finale of a strategy that began in 2021, when OnePlus and Oppo announced plans to merge the underlying codebases of OxygenOS and ColorOS. Although both operating systems have shared much of the same foundation in recent years, they continued to exist as separate software experiences with distinct branding and UI elements.
With the confirmation today, OnePlus has announced that future smartphones will instead run ColorOS globally.
What we know so far
Beyond confirming the software transition, OnePlus has not shared any additional details. The company has not announced a rollout timeline, nor has it confirmed which upcoming smartphones will be the first to ship with ColorOS.
We also don't know when the company will roll out ColorOS for existing OnePlus phones and which devices will be the first to get it. We'll update you as and when we get that information from the company.
The announcement follows earlier reports suggesting Oppo was looking to consolidate its software efforts across brands. However, OnePlus has only confirmed the move for its own smartphones and has not commented on any wider restructuring.
We are also waiting for word from Realme to understand whether a similar transition is planned for Realme UI and will update this story once we receive a response.
