The Next AI Privacy Battle Won’t Happen On Your Phone

The recent launch of the limited-edition Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in collaboration with Kylie Jenner has once again reignited the privacy debate around AI-powered wearables. Similar conversations are happening in India too, with several influencers facing backlash for promoting smart glasses as users questioned the privacy implications of devices capable of discreetly capturing photos and videos.

Beyond the debates on social media lies a larger question: are current privacy safeguards enough to keep pace with AI-powered smart glasses?

Privacy Concerns Go Beyond Discreet Recording

In an interaction with MySmartPrice, Major Vineet Kumar, Founder and Global President of CyberPeace, said the technology itself is not the concern. The main challenge is to make sure that the privacy protections also evolve at the same rate.

Kumar says that one of the most immediate concerns is how discreet these devices are. If you use a smartphone to record something, it becomes relatively obvious that you're using your camera, but smart glasses allow users to capture photos and videos from eye level without looking any different.

“The issue is not whether recording is possible—it already is,” Kumar said. “The concern is whether people around you are aware that they’re being recorded.”

Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses include an LED light that illuminates while recording, but Kumar argued that the tiny light might not always be noticeable, particularly in crowded spaces or from a distance. As wearable AI becomes more common, he believes conversations around consent will become increasingly important.

He spoke about spaces like offices, schools, gyms, and restaurants, where people may reasonably expect a certain degree of privacy despite being in public or semi-public settings. While existing laws against harassment, voyeurism, and unauthorised recording continue to apply regardless of the device being used, Kumar said that with wearable technology comes enforcement challenges because recordings can be harder to detect in the first place.

How Smart Glasses Handle User Data

Kumar further spoke about how consumers should also focus on how AI-powered wearables process data.

Since many smart glasses use cloud-based AI services to analyse images, respond to voice commands, and give users information, this means that these inputs can be processed to enable the AI features. Kumar says companies should be more transparent about what information is collected, how long it is kept for, and under what circumstances it may be reviewed.

“Users are trusting companies with highly personal data,” he said, adding that greater transparency around data handling would help build confidence as AI wearables become more widely used.

Cybersecurity Is Part Of The Privacy Conversation

Cybersecurity is another aspect that Kumar feels needs more attention. Like smartphones, smart glasses combine cameras, microphones, wireless connectivity, and cloud services, which makes them internet-connected computing devices rather than simple accessories.

“If any connected device is compromised, it can create privacy and security risks,” Kumar said. He added that strong authentication, regular software updates, and secure cloud infrastructure will become increasingly important as these devices become more capable.

What Are Companies Doing To Address These Concerns?

However, the conversation is not entirely one-sided. Technology companies have also introduced safeguards aimed at addressing some of these concerns.

Meta says that its smart glasses include a recording indicator designed to alert people around whenever a camera is taking photos or videos. Further, the company has also added privacy controls on the device through its companion app, allowing users to manage captured content and AI-related settings.

Meta has also published guidance encouraging users to respect local laws and social norms when using the device, particularly while recording others.

What Needs To Change Next?

However, for Kumar, technical safeguards alone are not enough. He wants the industry to set stronger standards around transparency and consent, alongside regulations that address AI-powered wearables specifically rather than treating them like conventional cameras or smartphones.

This debate around smart glasses also reflects a bigger challenge that most emerging technologies also have to face. Similar concerns were raised when smartphones, drones, and smart home cameras first entered the market, with regulations and public awareness evolving over time. AI-powered wearables appear to be approaching a similar turning point.

As these devices become more accessible, the focus will likely shift from what they can do to how responsibly they are used. For consumers, that means understanding privacy settings and using the technology thoughtfully. For companies and policymakers, it means making sure that the innovation is backed by transparency, stronger safeguards, and regulations that keep pace with rapidly evolving AI-powered devices.
