The Real Testing Ground for Samsung’s Smartwatches Isn’t a Lab, It’s India

At a time when smartwatch makers are trying to add more sensors, more AI, and a lot more "health features", Samsung is taking a slightly different route. A route that doesn't start in Seoul, but much closer to home. MySmartPrice recently spoke to Kyungyun Roo, Managing Director at Samsung's SRI-Noida R&D centre, along with Dr Amitabh Thapliyal, VP at Samsung's SRI-Noida R&D centre, who laid out how India is quietly influencing the way Samsung builds and validates its wearable ecosystem.

Roo positioned the Noida centre as central to Samsung's global push, noting that its work spans across Galaxy smartphones, wearables, and AI-led health innovation.

The conversation gave us an insight into how India is no longer a market that Samsung ships to but has become a testing ground for how health tech behaves in the real world.

India As a Stress Test For Global Tech

Remember that meme that goes around, "India is not for beginners"? We face crazy situations on a daily basis that people in the West cannot even imagine. So naturally, a lifestyle device being built and tested in other parts of the world won’t be able to fit into the life of an average Indian. 

Thapliyal shared a very interesting example of this. During testing, Samsung found its algorithm was falsely detecting bicycle rides when users were simply sitting in an auto-rickshaw on uneven roads. The combination of slow speeds, constant vibration, and erratic motion was similar to cycling, and it confused the system.

So, the South Korean tech giant fixed that, not only for India but for the rest of the world too. According to Thapliyal, “When we solve for India, we improve it everywhere” is essentially the philosophy here.

This is also something Roo indirectly pointed to in his opening, where he spoke about the Noida centre's focus on real-world innovation and collaboration, rather than just controlled development environments.

From what I have gathered, testing in messy, unpredictable environments rather than controlled ones seems to be a core part of SRI-Noida's role.

Not Medical, But Not Basic Either

Samsung is still careful about how it positions its wearables. Thapliyal says that Galaxy Watches are "preventive and wellness devices”, not diagnostic tools. This distinction is important in markets like India because our regulatory frameworks and medical validation are still evolving. Doctors, as pointed out during the interaction, don't always treat smartwatch data as clinical-grade.

That positioning also aligns with the broader direction Roo spoke about, building AI-driven systems that focus on long-term user value and responsible innovation, rather than overpromising on medical capabilities.

Instead, Samsung's response is to play the long game. It is focusing on longitudinal data. So, instead of one-off readings, their system tracks patterns over time – sleep, activity, vitals, and uses that to generate insights.

Their idea is to push users towards making better decisions or, when needed, seek actual medical help. 

The India-Specific Layer

While most features are made for a global rollout, India does get some special features, mostly around ecosystem integration. Samsung has partnered and aligned some parts of its health platform with India's ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission).

This allows users to store and share health records with the country's digital health framework. Along with this, there are also integrations like Find Care, which connect users to doctor consultations, lab tests, and medicine delivery through partners like Tata 1mg.

Sensors, accuracy, and real-world problems

When it comes to smart wearables, accuracy is a big part of the conversation. PPG (optical heart rate) sensors, in particular, are known to struggle with motion, skin tone variation, and loose contact during workouts.

Samsung didn't get into deep technical specifics here, but the emphasis was on validation across "all conditions", a phrase that came up repeatedly. That includes different skin tones, environmental lighting, and high-movement scenarios.

What I understood from this was that accuracy wasn't being solved in a lab alone, but they are trying to work on it through field testing, including in India's less-than-ideal conditions.

Privacy and AI

On AI and data privacy, Samsung is sticking to a now-familiar position: on-device processing where possible, encrypted cloud storage when needed, and user consent.

Health data, Thapliyal said, is secured within Samsung's Knox ecosystem, and even when processed in the cloud, it remains end-to-end encrypted. Third-party access requires explicit user approval.

India's Role In Samsung's Wearable Strategy

The Samsung Galaxy watches, and even the ring (which was discussed briefly), are just the hardware surface. The real game is interpreting data continuously and turning it into something more actionable.

As Roo also emphasised, the larger goal for the Noida R&D centre is to drive AI-led innovation across health and connected devices, making these systems more intelligent over time rather than just feature-heavy.

This is also where India's role becomes interesting. Between chaotic road conditions, diverse demographics, and large-scale user testing, the country is effectively acting as a testing ground for situations that most markets don't expose. Features that survive here are more likely to hold up globally.

It is still too early to call this a full shift in strategy, but the pattern is pretty clear. Some of the most practical improvements to wearable tech are coming from fixing edge cases like this.
