  • Apple is planning to release its first foldable device next year.
  • It could include a 20.3-inch foldable iPad and a foldable iPhone by 2026.

Apple‘s work on a foldable device (which has been going strong on the Android side) is in full swing. According to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu Apple, Apple will mass produce a foldable iPad, followed by a foldable iPhone by 2026.

Apple’s Push for Foldable Devices

As per the latest report from Pu, Apple is stepping up its development of foldable devices. He stated that there is “increasing visibility” of Apple’s foldable devices based on supply chain checks.

Apple’s first foldable device, a larger 20.3-inch model, is said to go into production by late 2025, with a foldable iPhone following in late 2026.

These foldables are expected to be part of Apple’s new high-end product line. If rumours are believed, Apple is working on two display sizes for the foldable iPhones: 7.9 inches and 8.3 inches.

Apple’s foray into foldable devices has been discussed for a while now. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that the company is working on a massive 20.3-inch foldable MacBook that could launch in 2027. Besides, Ross Young suggested that a 20-inch foldable hybrid device might arrive even sooner, around 2026 and 2027. Additionally, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicated that Apple is exploring a unique concept: a dual-screen foldable that combines MacBook and iPad functionalities.

Why Is It Taking So Long?

The foldable display tech is not new. There are foldable smartphones (from Samsung), set to get their sixth iteration. This raises the obvious question of why Apple is taking so long to launch its version.

If Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s recent report is to be believed, the company will not be able to create a completely crease-free foldable display. He stated that Apple engineers are working to solve this issue of foldable screens where the crease remains visible.

Apple is also known for its “all-or-nothing” ideology, where the tech giant aims for the highest standards and will not release a product until it meets those “Apple” standards.

There’s no word if the leaked timeline will be true, so, it’s best to take it with a pinch of salt. It remains to be seen when and if Apple jumps onto the foldable device bandwagon.
