Selfie cameras are not a new tech or a new term, especially in 2021. Although we’ve been using the front camera for taking selfies with friends, families, and celebrities, the year 2021 was also important to the front-facing camera, as people were also using the front camera for video calls and attending meetings or for educational purposes.
One of the innovations that happened in 2021 is the fact that the front-facing camera is hidden under the screen on phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Most phones these days take good selfies, but which are some of the best phones for selfies in the premium segment? The Indian Gadget Awards jury have finally voted, and here are the results.
The Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max was selected as the winner of the Best Premium Selfie Phone of 2021 award, while the runner up is the Vivo X70 Pro+.
Best Premium Selfie Phones of 2021 – Indian Gadget Awards 2021 Nominees
- Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
- Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G
- Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max
- Vivo X70 Pro+
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
Xiaomi’s first Ultra-premium flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra sports a 20MP selfie snapper with a bunch of useful features to top it. The selfies from this device come out pretty good with bright images and great details. As for the portraits, the phone does a good job with highlights and shadows with a good blurred background a little too much. Since the Mi 11 Ultra also comes with a secondary display, you can get even better selfies with the rear camera with a better portrait from the primary lens. There is also support for night mode selfies, Video HDR, and up to 120fps slow-mo video recording from the front camera.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G
Samsung’s top of the line flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S21 Ultra sports a 40MP camera on the front with an 80-degree field and an f/2.2 aperture. The images are extremely sharp and detailed. The skin tone of most pictures and videos are pleasant here. Samsung has also added an option to switch to a Natural look 一 which some users might prefer. The selfies taken in low-light are good too on the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. The front camera can also record up to 4K video at 30/60fps. The white balance and dynamic range are consistent on the phone across photos and videos.
Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max
The best of Apple, the iPhone 13 Pro Max brings a 12 MP 1/3.6″ sensor with an f/2.2-aperture lens. The selfie camera also allows you to shoot videos in the cinematic mode for recording videos with shallow depth of field and HDR videos with Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 fps. While the selfies come out good with excellent details and good exposure on the subject, they are not as good as you’d get on the S21 Ultra. But, this is the best selfie camera that Apple has to offer. It is also worth mentioning that the whole iPhone 12 series lineup comes with the same camera setup on the front for selfies and video calls.
Vivo X70 Pro+
Arguably, the best camera smartphone of the year, the Vivo X70 Pro+ is also a contender for the best selfie camera of the year. It boasts a 32MP 1/2.8″ selfie camera (S5KGD1 Samsung) with an f/2.45 aperture. The selfies taken from the X70 Pro+ are crisp with excellent details, dynamic range, and accurate colours. The same also goes for the portrait mode images as well, which works well in most cases. The selfies here actually come in full 32MP resolution and there is no pixel-binning happening behind the scenes here. They offer well-detailed shots with good dynamic range, eye-popping colours, and very good skin tones.
