Google “Coral” With Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB RAM and Android Q Spotted on Geekbench

The Google "Coral" could possibly be an upcoming Chromebook model.

An alleged upcoming Google Pixel series device codenamed “Coral” has appeared on the Geekbench benchmark database. The identity of the device, however, remains a complete mystery at this point. Some, however, are speculating that the Google Coral could be an upcoming Chromebook device and not a smartphone.

Google Coral to be Powered to by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC

The Google “Coral” Geekbench listing reveals the device runs on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 7nm octa-core SoC under the hood. In the memory department, however, the device will not be nearly as impressive as most other devices running on the same chipset. According to Geekbench, the device packs “only” 6GB of RAM. Compared to the current Pixel lineup though, 6GB of RAM is actually a decent improvement. In terms of software, the listing reveals the device is currently being tested on the Android Q operating system. The next version of Android is expected to be unveiled by Google at the I/O conference in May this year. However, the final stable version of Android Q will begin rolling out only in the second half of the year.

Moving on the benchmarking performance, the mysterious Google device scored 3,296 points in the single-core test and 9,235 points in the multi-core test. Both the scores are slightly lower than what we expect from a Snapdragon 855-powered devices. That said, it is important to note that “Coral” is a prototype device running on an early build of Android Q. The final retail version of the device is likely to be more or less as impressive as other Snapdragon 855-powered devices.

We expect the Google “Coral” to be introduced alongside the other 2019 Pixel devices sometime in October this year. Apart from the successors to Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones, Google is expected to release two mid-range Pixel handsets this year. The two smartphones are expected to be launched as the Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 XL Lite in spring this year. The Pixel 3 Lite could be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset, while the bigger Pixel 3 XL Lite will be powered by a more powerful Snapdragon 710 SoC instead.
