Instagram has officially brought its Edits video editing app to the desktop. The desktop release is designed for creators working on larger and more complex projects, bringing a multi-track timeline, advanced editing controls, 4K watermark-free exports and direct Instagram publishing to the platform.
Instagram says more than 50 million people have used Edits in just over a year, and the company plans to continue updating the desktop version every week.
Instagram Edits Desktop App Features
The Mac version of Edits is designed around projects that can become difficult to manage on a smartphone. The desktop editor offers a larger workspace with mouse and keyboard controls, making it easier to work with multiple clips and precisely edit timelines. The app includes a multi-track timeline, allowing creators to work across multiple layers of video and audio. It also adds keyframes for dynamic transitions and detailed audio waveforms for more accurate, beat-based editing.
Creators can also split, cut and trim clips, while tools such as colour wheels, log conversions and curves provide additional options for colour grading. Users can import their own LUTs and font files to maintain a specific visual style or branding. The desktop version retains several of the features that made Edits useful on mobile. Creators get access to Instagram's licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, along with hundreds of sound and video effects. The app also offers unlimited automatic captions with support for multiple languages. Saved audio and text styles from the mobile version can appear on desktop, while keyboard shortcuts can be customised or carried over from another editing application.
Instagram is also adding support for AI agents through MCP, allowing compatible AI agents to connect with the desktop editor and assist with projects.
One of the biggest advantages of Edits on desktop is that creators do not have to move completed videos back to their phones before publishing. The desktop app allows users to publish directly to Instagram, with native features including tagging, location and Trial Reels. This is designed to eliminate a common desktop-to-mobile workflow where creators export a video, transfer it to their phone, make additional changes and then upload it.
Edits also supports both horizontal and vertical aspect ratios, along with 4K watermark-free exports, allowing creators to use the editor for other platforms and personal projects as well.
Instagram Edits Desktop Availability
The desktop launch is available now on Mac and is only the beginning for Edits, according to Instagram. The company says it will continue shipping weekly updates based on creator feedback.
One of the features currently in development is the ability to move between desktop and mobile while continuing work on the same project. Instagram says additional features are also in development. The Instagram Edits desktop app is now available for Mac, giving creators a larger editing workspace while retaining the platform's social publishing tools and creator-focused features.
Bringing Edits to Mac makes Instagram's video editor a much more serious alternative to mobile-first editing workflows. The combination of a multi-track timeline, colour tools, keyframes, 4K watermark-free exports and direct Instagram publishing could appeal to creators who have outgrown editing entirely on their phones. The bigger test will be whether Instagram can keep improving the desktop app quickly enough to compete with established desktop editors.
