Sony has introduced the FX5, a new full-frame camera in its Cinema Line series, in India. The camera brings internal 16-bit RAW recording, Open Gate shooting, and a newly developed fully stacked CMOS sensor. It also supports 5K recording at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps, and Full HD recording at up to 240fps.
Sony FX5 Features and Specifications
The Sony FX5 features a full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 image processing engine and a dedicated AI processing unit. Sony claims over 15 stops of dynamic range when shooting in S-Log3, allowing the camera to retain details across highlights and shadows. It offers three base ISO settings of 800, 4000, and 12800. The camera also introduces Dual Gain Shooting to the FX series, which is designed to improve gradation and reduce image noise without compromising shadow details.
Another major addition is Open Gate shooting with a 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor. This allows creators to work with different aspect ratios and framing requirements. The camera also supports 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm image scan modes.
For the first time in the FX series, the FX5 supports internal recording in Sony's proprietary 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW format. It supports X-OCN LT, X-OCN C1, and X-OCN C2 codecs, allowing creators to record RAW footage without requiring an external recorder. The camera also features AI-powered subject recognition using human pose estimation technology. It can detect a person's eyes, head, and body position, while Real-time Tracking helps maintain focus on moving subjects. Sony has also included Auto Tracing White Balance, which uses visible light and infrared sensors alongside deep learning-based light source estimation.
For stabilisation, the FX5 features 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation, along with Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode. The camera also supports anamorphic lenses with de-squeeze options for 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x lenses. The camera features a 3.5-inch, approximately 2.76-million-dot, 16:9 multi-angle touchscreen monitor. It can tilt upwards by approximately 98 degrees, downwards by 40 degrees, and open sideways by 180 degrees. Sony has also introduced its BIG6 home screen, which brings important shooting settings such as frame rate, exposure, and LUTs together.
Sony has introduced two optional accessories alongside the FX5. The first is the DVF-EL1 detachable OLED viewfinder, which features a 0.58-type, approximately 7.07-million-dot panel with HDR support, a DCI-P3-equivalent colour gamut, and 10-bit gradation.
The second is the XLR-H2 handle unit, which features two XLR/TRS combo terminals and supports up to four-channel audio input. It enables in-camera audio recording at up to 96kHz and 32-bit float. The camera also supports remote monitoring and operation through Sony's Monitor & Control application. Other connectivity options include two USB Type-C ports, HDMI, and a wired LAN terminal. USB Power Delivery support enables external power supply for longer recording sessions.
Sony has also confirmed a planned Version 2.0 update for August 2027 or later. It is expected to add HFR recording at up to 240fps in X-OCN, XAVC S-I recording in 3:2 Open Gate, an optimised interface for vertical shooting, and a frame grab function.
