iPhone 14, 14 Plus: What’s New?

The new iPhone 14 models come with a few upgrades over the outgoing models.

A New Plus Model

Apple launched the iPhone 14 Plus as its new large-screen, non-Pro iPhone. The 14 Plus’ larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display offers more screen estate while offering 1200 nits of peak brightness. The new Plus model also comes with improved thermal management.

The standard 14 model has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, which offers the same features as the Plus model. Both models also feature a wide notch for the Face ID sensors and the front camera.

Bigger Battery

Apple claims that the iPhone 14 series offers an all-day battery life. The 14 Plus offers even longer battery life, which Apple claims is the best on any iPhone. Apple did not reveal the battery capacity details of its new models.

Larger Camera Sensors

The iPhone 14 series gets a new 12MP camera sensor. Yes, the megapixel count is the same as the 13 series but the 14 series gets larger sensors. The larger sensor is claimed to offer up to 49 per cent improvement in lowlight camera performance. There is also a secondary 12MP ultrawide camera.

There is also a new 12MP front camera with an f/1.9 aperture.

In terms of features, the iPhones get a new action mode for a better video recording experience on the move. Apple has also worked on improving its Deep Fusion for improved performance and details in lowlight images. Users can expect up to 2.5x improvements in photos shot using the main camera and 2x improvements using photos shot on the ultrawide and front camera.

Other Specifications

Under the hood, there is the A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 Pro series. This chip has six CPU cores and five GPU cores.

The iPhone models also come with a feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite. As the name suggests, the feature uses satellites orbiting around the earth to help users connect to emergency services in areas with no network. The service will be free for two years from the date of purchase. Currently, the feature is available only for users in the US and Canada. Lastly, the latest iPhones run iOS 16 out of the box.
