Elon Musk acquired Twitter to make it a one-stop solution similar to WeChat in China. The micro-blogging social media platform is slowly but steadily heading in that direction. There have been reports that the company is actively working towards introducing peer-to-peer payments on X. And now, the CEO Linda Yaccarino has said in an interview with CNBC that while the payment feature is still in development, video calling support is coming soon to the platform. X Users Will Soon Be Able to Video Call Each Other on The Platform
CNBC recently interviewed X Corp. CEO Linda Yaccarino to explore the company’s plan for the future. The top executive stated that she joined X with the autonomy to run the company under Elon Musk, and their roles are very clear. She then went on to confirm that the company is currently working on introducing new features in the bid to make X the everything app for its users.
The CEO emphasised the importance of real-time interactions on a social media platform. Yaccarino compared X to a global town square, fuelled by free expression and where the public should be able to interact and gather in real-time.
She then confirmed that the video calling feature on X will not require users to provide their phone numbers. This is similar to Meta’s social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, which use the account name and IP to make video calls. The feature is already in the final stages of development since Yaccarino’s confirmation comes after an X employee shared the first glimpse of the feature.

Andrea Conway, a designer at X, has posted screenshots of the video calling interface on X. As you can see in the screenshots above, it appears to be an iOS interface. Users will get a dedicated calling icon in the top right corner of their DMs. When the user taps on it, they can pick whether to make an audio or video call to the recipient. The second screenshot shows the actual video call in progress with four buttons for speaker, mute, video, and end call, in that order. Bear in mind that this tweet by Conway is a month old, and the final iteration could appear different.
Yaccarino has yet to share a timeline for the rollout of the video calling feature on X. Also, it’s not clear whether the feature will be free for all or will be restricted to X Premium users.
