Samsung has just launched its much-awaited Galaxy S24 Series in India. The the new flagships bring in plenty of upgrades with the latest processors and better cameras, and of course, the power of Galaxy AI. But that doesn’t mean the older the Galaxy S23 Series is now outdated. Honestly, given the specifications and performance, the older S23 phones remain an appealing option and more so after latest price cuts.

In fact, Samsung recently reduced the price of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ by Rs 10,000, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to follow the same soon. So should you consider buying the Galaxy S23 Series in 2024, even after the launch of the latest Galaxy S24 models? You definitely should, and here’s why.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs Galaxy S24 Series: Prices

Samsung has slightly raised the prices of its latest S24 flagships when compared to launch prices from last year. Considering that the upgrades between these two generations are not that major, the Galaxy S23 and S23+ are excellent devices at their current prices.

The difference between the Ultra models is not that significant as Samsung is yet to announce a price cut for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which hopefully should happen soon. Here is a price comparison between the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S24 Series. The prices mentioned below are for the base storage variants of all devices.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series vs Galaxy S24 Series: What Has Changed?

The biggest difference between the two generations of Samsung flagships is that the entire Galaxy S23 Series exclusively features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. In contrast this year, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ feature the Exynos 2400 chipset, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is reserved for the top-end Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Although both processors are on par with each other in terms of performance, Exynos chips have faced an issue of thermal throttling in the past. While these problems are expected to be fixed with the Exynos 2400 on the Galaxy S24 Series, but the results can only be determined after thorough testing. Hence, the base models of the Galaxy S23 Series can be considered a good backup as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a very thermally stable processor.

Coming to the base Galaxy S23 against the newer Galaxy S24, it would be fair to say that apart from the chipset, not much has changed in terms of specifications. The screen resolution and camera setup remain the same as seen on the Galaxy S23. The battery has received a slight upgrade from 3900mAh to 4000mAh in the Galaxy S24.

If you are one who prefers Qualcomm chipsets and want a compact flagships, the Galaxy S23 remains a good choice, considering it now starts at Rs 64,999.

Moving on to the Galaxy S23+ and its latest iteration, Samsung has introduced has received two major upgrades on Galaxy S24+. First, the display resolution has gone from 1080p to 2K, while using the same high-quality Dynamic AMOLED panel. The company has also increased the default RAM capacity from 8GB to 12GB on the S24+. The battery capacity has received a small top-up from 4700mAh to 4900mAh. However, the camera setup has remained unchanged.

But these are minor tweaks, and the Galaxy S23+ remains one of the best options, especially given the camera is the same as the S24+. Again the price is Rs 15,000 lower compared to the newer phone.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is undoubtedly the highlight of the entire series. Samsung has introduced a titanium frame on its top-end flagship, which is more durable than the aluminium frame on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The company has also upgraded the periscope lens from 10MP to 50MP. Samsung has removed the curvature on the display and has equipped the Galaxy S24 Ultra with a flatscreen, to prevent accidental S Pen touches. Other elements like the primary camera and battery are the same on both devices.

But the truth is that the Galaxy S23 Ultra has one of the best cameras in the Android smartphone market and even if you do settle for the older device, it is in no way a compromise. However, Samsung has not yet introduced a price cut so far, and at the moment, the S24 Ultra makes more sense if you are spending that amount. But if and when the phone gets a solid price cut, it is a good choice to consider.

Samsung has also confirmed that it will bring Galaxy AI features to all models of the Galaxy S23 Series with future updates. Hence, users will be able to experience most of the new AI features like translation and image editing on the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra.

Overall, if you are looking to buy a new Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S23 Series is a good option to consider.

  • It is capable enough to serve you for the next 2-3 years.
  • However, if you plan to use your upcoming device for more than 3 years, then you should look for a device from the Galaxy S24 Series as Samsung will provide 7 years of software updates with its newest flagships.

Galaxy S23 Series in 2024 Compared to Other Flagships

The iQOO 12 is the most affordable device amongst the lot, even cheaper than the current discounted prices of the Galaxy S23 Series. However, the cameras on the iQOO flagship may still fall behind the Galaxy S23 Series due to better image processing in Samsung. The iQOO 12 fills this void with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, offering a performance boost. A similar situation is expected with the OnePlus 12 as well, which is scheduled to launch next week.

The OnePlus 11 and the Galaxy S23 Series were two of the most popular Android flagships of 2023. Both devices are on par with each other in terms of performance as they have the same chipset. The Galaxy S23 models offer a better camera, whereas the OnePlus 11 provides faster charging and a longer battery life.

It’s slightly difficult to directly compare the Galaxy S23 Series with the iPhone 15 Series, despite being in a similar price bracket. If we keep aside the Android vs iOS preference, then the newer iPhone 15 models offer better performance and equally good cameras as compared to the Galaxy S23 Series. Both companies offer devices in three different form factors, giving complete flexibility to the user.

From a raw price to performance factor, the iPhone 15 Series brings more value to the table as it will get extended software support. But if you are not comfortable with Apple, then the Galaxy S23 Series is a solid option to consider in 2024.
