AKAI has expanded its semi-automatic washing machine range in India with models spanning 7kg to 14kg, starting at Rs 12,590. Announced on September 22, the lineup carries a claimed 5-star energy rating across models, with select variants offering a 35-minute wash programme that includes soaking.
The launch puts capacity, running costs and durability at the centre of AKAI's pitch. For Indian households buying their first washing machine, or replacing an older semi-automatic model, these can be more immediate considerations than connected features. The wider capacity range also gives the brand room to address larger families without asking them to move to a fully automatic machine.
AKAI Semi-Automatic Washing Machines: Price and Availability
The new range starts at Rs 12,590 and is available through AKAI India's website, select third-party online stores and authorised offline retailers. The company has not provided a complete model-wise price list in its announcement.
AKAI offers a five-year warranty on the wash motor and says its service network covers more than 1,200 centres across 28 states. Buyers should check the comprehensive warranty separately, since the announced five-year cover applies specifically to the wash motor.
A 35-Minute Wash on Select Models, Capacities up to 14kg
The main addition is Magic Wash, which uses AKAI's Active Flow 360° pulsator for a 35-minute wash cycle with an integrated soak function. This feature is available on select models and should not be read as a 35-minute, fully automated wash-to-spin process: users still need to move clothes between the wash and spin tubs.
Different variants use different pulsator designs. The x5 Wing models offer Normal and Gentle programmes, with a Strong mode added at higher capacities. Select models get a Dual Force pulsator, while the 8.5kg glass-lid range includes a Jumbo Pulsator variant with three wash programmes and an electronic timer of up to 40 minutes.
An 11kg model introduces stainless-steel wash and spin tubs, a first for AKAI's semi-automatic lineup, according to the company. Across the range, the brand lists rust-proof bodies, anti-rat mesh and thermal protection for the wash motor. Soft-closing lids, castor wheels, collar scrubbers and lint filters are also offered, depending on the variant.
The distinction between models matters here. A higher capacity does not automatically mean every advertised feature is included, so buyers should check the exact variant for Magic Wash, tub material and lid design.
Why AKAI Is Building Around the Semi-Automatic Buyer
The expansion fits AKAI's wider focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. In a recent interview with Indian Retailer, managing director and CEO Anurag Sharma identified these cities as important growth drivers and said the brand's products were available through more than 4,000 retail outlets. Its combination of online sales and physical retail gives customers the option to inspect the machines and discuss local service support before purchasing.
Semi-automatic machines retain a practical role in homes with irregular water supply because users can fill the tub manually and control when water is added. Larger capacities can also appeal to families handling substantial laundry loads. The compromise is the time and effort required to manage filling, rinsing and transferring wet clothes, which buyers should weigh against the convenience of a fully automatic model.
AKAI's "Spa for your Clothes" positioning appears intended to give this utilitarian category a stronger fabric-care identity. The stainless-steel tubs and soft-closing lids support that approach, while the motor protection and service-network messaging address concerns about long-term ownership. The strategy is to give buyers reasons to choose AKAI beyond capacity and the purchase price.
While this may be the case, it still leaves the challenge of competing with familiar washing machine brands such as LG, Samsung and Whirlpool. For AKAI, Japanese heritage can help with recognition, but wash performance, spare-parts availability and dependable local service will determine whether the proposition holds up. At the dealer, the useful comparison is the final price of equivalent-capacity models, their comprehensive warranty and the service coverage available at the buyer's pin code.
