The demand for air purifiers in India has surged sharply in recent years, particularly during the winter months when pollution levels peak across northern cities. With rising AQI levels becoming a recurring concern, even budget households are beginning to see purifiers as essential appliances rather than seasonal luxuries.
If you’re just starting out with air purifiers and don’t want to break the bank, the Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B might just catch your eye. Priced at ₹8,990, it’s an entry-level model designed for smaller spaces, with a coverage area of around 250 square feet. Naturally, I was curious to see how it would perform in a compact space where dust and other particles tend to accumulate over time.
Before getting started with it, I also wanted to add why we were excited about this product. Not many people are aware, but Sharp has long been regarded as one of the pioneers in air purification, largely because of its proprietary Plasmacluster Ion technology. This technology is used in several of its mid-range and flagship models, like the FP-F40E-W and FP-J80M-H. The FP-JA30M-B, however, represents the brand’s push into the budget category. By pricing it under ₹10,000, Sharp is clearly trying to appeal to first-time buyers or those looking for a secondary purifier for smaller rooms.
I set up the unit in our MSP lab, where the air sometimes feels stale due to limited ventilation. Given its budget-friendly price, I wasn’t expecting cutting-edge features or ultra-fast purification, but I hoped it would make a noticeable difference in maintaining fresher air. Since the coverage area is limited to small rooms, I thought it would be a perfect fit for this space.
While I knew this wasn’t the kind of purifier built for large open areas, I was eager to test how effective it could be for someone looking to improve air quality in a smaller home or apartment.
Build Quality and Design
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B has a simple and modern look, with a curved white body made from ABS plastic. Unlike most air purifiers in this price segment, which tend to have a boxy design, this model takes a more minimalistic approach. Its sleek and unassuming appearance ensures it blends seamlessly into smaller rooms without standing out. Weighing just 3 kg, it’s significantly lighter than many other models I’ve tested, making it highly portable and easy to move between rooms. However, its lightweight build gives it a slightly less robust feel than bulkier, premium purifiers. That said, it doesn’t come across as overly fragile, striking a reasonable balance for its price.
One of the features to make note of is the three-colour LED indicator on the top, which gives real-time feedback on air quality. Now, while most purifiers have colour-based indicators, they are typically placed at the front of the air purifier so that you can see the air quality from anywhere in the room. With the indicator on top, you have to, well, literally look down at it to see the air quality. This can be a problem if you’re planning to monitor the quality regularly. However, if you’re a set-it-and-forget-it kind of person, it won’t matter as much.
The panel on top also has an on/off switch, a button to change modes, a button to reset your settings, and a button to switch on the Allergy setting. Overall, the design feels straightforward and functional—perfect for a budget-friendly air purifier aimed at smaller spaces.
Filters and Air Purification Performance
Filters
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B uses a fairly standard filtration system, combining a HEPA filter, a Carbon filter, and a Pre-filter. The Pre-filter handles larger particles like dust and pet hair, making sure the other filters can work more efficiently. The HEPA filter is the workhorse here, designed to capture up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, which includes dust, pollen, and even some bacteria. The Carbon filter rounds out the system by absorbing odours and harmful gases, giving the air a fresher feel.
Though this is a more basic filtration system compared to premium models, it does the job for smaller spaces. While you won’t find advanced filtration layers like anti-bacterial or silver ion filters, the combination here is more than adequate for everyday use in bedrooms or small living rooms.
Another thing that we would like to mention is that at the time of writing this review, the replacement filters for this Sharp air purifier were available easily on e-commerce websites like Amazon.in
Air Purification Performance
To get a better sense of how well the purifier works, I ran it through some corner and centre placement tests in the lab. The starting air quality was less than ideal, with PM2.5 levels well above safe limits. I monitored its progress over 25 minutes, both in the corner and centre of the room.
Corner Test Results:
| Time (minutes) | PM2.5 (ug/m3) | AQI |
| Start | 397 | 100 |
| After 10 mins | 271 | 100 |
| After 20 mins | 178 | 71 |
| After 25 mins | 140 | 56 |
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B brought the AQI down to 71 in 20 minutes and then to 56 by the time 25 minutes had passed. It also brought down the PM2.5 levels from 397 ug/m3 to 271 ug/m3 in 10 minutes and 140 ug/m3 in 25 minutes. We again noted the reading after 45 minutes, and by then, the AQI level had come down to 35, while the PM 2.5 level was maintained at 89 ug/m3.
Based on the data, the Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B emerges as a standout performer in the under ₹10,000 category. While all purifiers begin at an AQI of 100 and show no immediate improvement after 10 minutes, Sharp’s model demonstrates exceptional efficiency by reducing AQI to 56 within 25 minutes. This is significantly better than competitors like Qubo Smart Air Purifier Q200 (68) and Eureka Forbes Air Purifier 150 (72). Ultimately, it achieves an AQI of 35, while the Qubo Smart Air Purifier Q200 goes further down to 34. There is not a significant difference in the reading for the same.
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B was also effective in reducing the PM 2.5 level, especially in the first 25 minutes of usage. Starting at 397 µg/m³, it swiftly brings down levels to 271 within 10 minutes. It achieves a remarkable 140 within 25 minutes of usage —outpacing models like the Eureka Forbes Air Purifier 150 (181) and the Qubo Smart Air Purifier Q200 (170). Ultimately, it reaches an impressive PM 2.5 level of 89. Meanwhile, the Levoit LV-H128 demonstrates a slower reduction trajectory, starting at 389 µg/m³ and only reaching 259 after 25 minutes before achieving a final PM 2.5 level of 88. While effective, its slower pace positions it behind Sharp in terms of purification speed.
It’s important to understand that in the hierarchy of air purifier readings, the PM2.5 readings can be far more critical than AQI. PM2.5 refers to the amount of fine particulate matter in the air, and this can directly harm your health. AQI is, on the other hand, more of a composite reading that tells you about PM2.5 along with sulphur dioxide, Ozone, nitrous oxide and so on.
The bottom line is – if you’re buying an air purifier to improve your health, watch the PM2.5 ratings.
Centre Test Results:
| Time (minutes) | PM2.5 (ug/m3) | AQI |
| Start reading | 397 | 100 |
| After 10 minutes | 266 | 100 |
| After 20 minutes | 176 | 70 |
| After 25 minutes | 161 | 64 |
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B was performed at par, and we placed it in the centre of the lab. After 10 minutes, the PM2.5 level dropped significantly to 266 ug/m3, but the AQI remained at the 100 mark. After using the air purifier for 20 minutes, I noted that the PM2.5 levels were down to 176 ug/m3, with the AQI further improving to 76.
After 25 minutes, the PM2.5 level reached 161 ug/m3, with an AQI of 64. Furthermore, we again noted the reading at the 45-minute mark and found the AQI at that time was 34, which is considered to be safe, and the PM 2.5 level had dropped to 87 ug/m3. This demonstrated that the purifier consistently lowered pollution levels over time, especially in a small room setting.
Interestingly, the Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B was the best performer in the under ₹10,000 category among all the air purifiers that we have reviewed, particularly excelling in consistency and precision. Starting at PM 2.5 levels of 397 µg/m³, it efficiently reduces pollutants to 266 in 10 minutes and further to an exceptional 161 µg/m³ in 25 minutes. Ultimately, it achieves an impressive reading of 87 µg/m³, matching premium devices in performance. Moreover, its AQI improvement from 100 to 34 highlights its ability to deliver cleaner air quickly, making it ideal for small to medium-sized spaces. Its low TVOC (0.763 mg/m³) and HCHO (0.172 mg/m³) levels ensure not only particle filtration but also a safer indoor environment.
Ease of Changing Filters and Cost
Changing the filters on the Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B is a fairly straightforward process, which is great for users who may not be very tech-savvy. Here’s how it works:
- Remove the Back Panel: The first step is to pull off the back panel by holding down the main unit and gently pulling the panel out. It’s designed to pop off without much effort, so you won’t need any tools to get started.
- Take out the Old Filter: Once the back panel is off, the old filter is easily accessible. Simply pull it out—there are no screws or complicated mechanisms holding it in place.
- Place the New Filter: When installing the new filter, you’ll need to make sure it’s facing the correct way. The unit won’t operate properly if the filter is installed backwards, so double-check the orientation before you close it up.
- Replace the Back Panel: Finally, snap the back panel back into place, and you’re done. The whole process takes only a couple of minutes.
In terms of cost, the replacement filters are reasonably priced, especially compared to some higher-end models. Given that the purifier is entry-level, maintaining it doesn’t come with a hefty price tag is a big plus for anyone looking for a budget-friendly solution to improve air quality at home.
Noise Levels
When it comes to noise, the Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B is fairly quiet, but you’ll still notice some sound, especially if you’re up close. At its peak, the noise level is around 51.2 dB when standing about 1 foot away, which is roughly the same as a normal conversation at home or the sound of a running refrigerator. It’s noticeable but not overly distracting.
At its lowest setting, the noise drops to around 36.6 dB, which is more like a soft whisper. This lower noise level makes it suitable for running while you sleep or work without being too disruptive. Overall, the noise levels are manageable, and for most daily activities, you won’t find it bothersome.
Final Verdict
The Sharp Air Purifier FP-JA30M-B offers solid value for its price, making it a great entry-level option for smaller rooms. Its filtration system, while basic, does a respectable job of reducing PM2.5 levels and improving air quality in spaces up to 250 sq. ft. The build is lightweight and easy to move around, although the ABS plastic construction feels a bit less durable than higher-end models. Changing filters is quick and hassle-free, and the noise levels are low enough for most daily activities, including sleeping. However, it doesn’t pack as much power as larger units, which is something to keep in mind if you’re considering it for bigger rooms. Overall, for the price and performance, it’s a good fit for those looking to keep indoor air clean without spending too much.
Traditionally, Sharp’s strength lies in reliability and consistent performance rather than flashy features. This model continues that narrative. It prioritises clean air delivery and simple usability over connected or “smart” functions. The approach suggests that Sharp isn’t abandoning its premium segment but rather expanding downward to capture a broader demographic that’s becoming more health-conscious but remains price-sensitive. However, there are alternatives available that offer smart features in this price segment. Brands like Qubo, Philips, and Xiaomi are experimenting with app-based controls, new HEPA+ filters, and compact form factors at competitive prices. This push has also encouraged established players like Sharp to reimagine affordability while maintaining core filtration performance.
Should You Buy It?
If you’re purchasing your first air purifier and need something compact, easy to maintain, and genuinely effective for small rooms, the Sharp FP-JA30M-B is a smart starting point. It delivers impressive purification for its price and works best in bedrooms, study areas, or home offices up to 250 sq. ft.
If you already own an older or generic purifier that lacks a HEPA filter, this model will feel like a solid upgrade in both efficiency and noise control. However, if you plan to move to a larger apartment or want smart-home integration features like app control or scheduling, you might be better off investing in a higher-end model from Sharp’s own mid-tier range or a competitor’s connected lineup.
