Respawn Entertainment and EA’s Apex Legends has been a roaring success for both the publisher and the studio and has emerged as a true contender in the highly competitive battle royale genre. Respawn Entertainment, post-Titanfall 2, elected to work on a spin-off set in the Titanfall universe as opposed to a proper sequel Titanfall 2.

The vision would eventually evolve in scope to the point where the game was turned into a free-to-play battle royale title. EA decided to release Apex Legends without any prior promotion, or even a trailer, and the game got off to a great start.

Respawn have proved themselves to be masters when it comes to responsive gunplay and innovative traversal. Apex Legends quickly became a fan-favourite on the back of several of its most innovative features like the Ping system and the hero-shooter design.

Apex Legends: Gameplay

The game combines the variety and unpredictability of a hero shooter and the open-ended nature of the Battle Royale genre. As of now, there are 17 characters to pick from – with each having special abilities, equipment, and playstyle.

Some Legends are more Offensive, while others can be more suited to Defense or Recon. There are several game modes for players to dive in, such as:

  • Firing Range (Training)
  • Trios (Standard 3-member squad, 60 player lobbies)
  • Duos (2-member squad, 40 player lobbies)
  • Ranked (Trios, Ranked)
  • Arenas (Arena shooter, 3v3)

There is plenty to like about Apex Legends, especially when it comes to lore and storylines. What sets it apart from other Battle Royales is its prioritization of expanding the lore and providing backstories for each of its Legends.

The sheer variety of playstyles and combinations players can have in the game easily makes it one of the best games in the genre.
