Highlights
  • The cover screen gets a major bump and now measures 3.4 inches.
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC powers it.
  • Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the latest addition to the successful line of flip phones, and it comes with some impressive upgrades. Its compact design has been enhanced to make it even more practical for everyday use, and the 3.4-inch cover screen is the standout feature.

The new cover screen offers more screen real estate, which means you can customize and use your Flip 5 in ways you’ve never been able to before. With widgets, you can check the weather, control music, access quick settings, answer calls, and even use Samsung Wallet, all while the phone is closed. You can easily swipe right to check notifications and respond to texts with custom messages, and swiping left gives you access to widgets, with almost 13 options to choose from. Quick Settings are available by swiping down, and Samsung Wallet can be accessed by swiping up.

The larger cover screen also means you can take hands-free photos using FlexCam or the phone in tent mode. You can even choose between Natural or Warm colour tones, all from the comfort of the cover screen.

When it comes to the display quality, the main screen is truly stunning, just like the previous generation. It offers an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, and the colours are vibrant while the text appears sharp. During our limited time with the phone, we also noticed that sunlight legibility seemed decent, but wait until our review for our final thoughts. The cover screen is definitely the highlight of the display, and it looks even better with some software optimisations. It’s incredibly useful, and the quality is top-notch. However, we’ll need to spend more time on the phone before we can provide a full review.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes in four stylish colours: Graphite, Cream, Mint, and Lavender (which is a bit on the purple side). My favourite is the new Cream colour, which looks particularly classy with its whitish shade.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is an impressive flip phone with some seriously cool upgrades, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a practical and stylish device.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 First Impressions: Camera is the Biggest Upgrade

During the pre-briefing, Samsung claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has the most powerful camera on a flip phone yet, and I could see the improvements. The camera has faster autofocusing and improved colours in normal and low light. Although I had limited time with the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the camera improvement was noticeable. The dual 12MP cameras look good, with standard camera features, and the 10MP selfie camera is decent. However, I reserve judgment on the cameras until the review, so stay tuned to MySmartPrice.

Moving on to the processor, Samsung chose Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and we can expect some custom tweaking for the new Galaxy phone. My initial impressions of the processor were positive, with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 being super quick. On paper, the 8GB RAM may seem insignificant, considering that regular apps hog memory on your phone. It will be interesting to see how the Galaxy Z Flip 5 handles multitasking, but I will reserve judgment until the review.

The battery and charging departments are almost identical to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The Flip 5 comes with a 3700mAh battery with 25W wired charging support. It also has IPX8 water resistance but no dust resistance.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 runs on One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13. Samsung promises 5 years of security updates and 4 generations of OS upgrades. Overall, the all-new Galaxy Z Flip 5 appears to be a bold phone with some promising upgrades. Stay tuned to MySmartPrice for the full review soon.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with a starting price of USD 999 for the 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage option. The 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage option comes with a price tag of USD 1,119.
