At the Mobile World Congress in February this year, Huawei introduced its MediaPad M5 series of Android tablets. The MediaPad series comes in three variants – MediaPad M5 8.4”, MediaPad M5 10.8”, and the 10.8” MediaPad M5 Pro. All three tablets were launched with the Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 interface on top. However, it now appears that the Android 9 Pie update for the three models might be around the corner. The 8.4” MediaPad M5 has been caught on the Geekbench benchmark database running on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Android Pie Update Arriving Soon?

The SXX-AL09 variant of the MediaPad M5 Android tablet has made an appearance on Geekbench running on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system. The listing suggests Huawei is currently testing Android 9.0 Pie on the tablet and may decide to release a stable update sometime in the near future. Since the 8.4-inch MediaPad M5 is the most affordable model in the MediaPad M5 series, it is highly likely that the manufacturer is testing Android Pie builds for the more expensive 10.8” MediaPad M5 and MediaPad M5 Pro models as well. Along with Android 9.0, the update might also bring EMUI 9.0 to the tablets, the next iteration of Huawei’s custom user-interface. However, Huawei is yet to share any plans of upgrading the MediaPad M5 series to Android 9.0 Pie. Since the company is not known for being among the quickest Android OEMs with regards to software updates, we will not be surprised if the stable Android Pie update for the MediaPad M5 series begins rolling out sometime early next year.

The MediaPad M5 8.4” version sports an IPS LCD display with 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution and a pixel density of 359 pixels per inch. It runs on a HiSilicon Kirin 960 octa-core processor and comes with 4GB of RAM. In terms of storage, Huawei offers the tablet in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage options. The tablet is equipped with a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera for video calling. Some of its other key features include a fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, and a 5100mAh battery.
