Indian Railways is gearing up to launch an all-inclusive super app, aiming to simplify the passenger experience by combining ticketing, train tracking, and other services currently spread across multiple apps. This move is set to streamline the existing digital offerings, making it more convenient for users.

A senior government official stated to the Economic Times that the new super app, developed by CRIS, will bring together various railway apps, reducing the hassle of downloading multiple applications for different services. The goal is to enhance user experience, improve synergy, and explore monetisation opportunities for the existing services.

“The Indian Railways apps need an overhaul based on user feedback,” said the official, underscoring the commitment to making digital services more user-friendly.

The consolidated app will include features from existing applications like Rail Madad (complaints and suggestions), UTS (booking unreserved train tickets), and the National Train Enquiry System (real-time train status). Additionally, specialised apps for activities like inspection reports and geo-location-based track asset inspections will be integrated.

Popular Standalone Apps Joining the Super App

Popular standalone apps like IRCTC Rail Connect (train ticket booking and cancellation), IRCTC eCatering Food on Track (food delivery to train seats), and IRCTC Air (flight ticket booking) could also become part of the unified platform.

Digital Progress in Numbers

The estimated cost for developing and running the super app over three years is around Rs 90 crore for the national transporter. IRCTC Rail Connect, with over 100 million downloads, remains the most popular among the existing railway apps, playing a crucial role in reserved category ticket bookings. With over 10 million downloads, UTS caters to platform tickets and season passes.

In the fiscal year 2023, Rail Connect handled 560,000 train ticket bookings, representing almost half of the total tickets sold by IRCTC. This move towards a unified super app marks a significant step in the digitisation of Indian Railways to provide passengers with a more straightforward and efficient travel experience.
