AI is the buzzword of the year, and every big tech company is racing to compete with the industry leader OpenAI. Jio, the Indian telecom powerhouse, is not far behind. Recently, the company’s Chairman Akash Ambani stated that they are working with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to launch an indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, which will be called ‘Bharat GPT’, according to an Indian Express report.

“We have been engaged in a joint project with IIT Bombay to initiate a Bharat GPT programme,” he announced while addressing the audience at Techfest, the annual three-day science and technology festival of IIT Bombay, which commenced on Wednesday.

He further added that “At present, we have just scratched the surface with large language models and generative AI and the next decade will be defined by these applications.”

“We are working very hard to launch AI not only as a vertical inside our organisation, but also horizontally across all our sectors,” Ambani said

Ambani highlighted the need to create a strong development system and shared the company’s dedication to bringingJio 2.0 to life. Through the Bharat GPT program in partnership with IIT Bombay, they aim to use advanced AI inspired models to transform different industries.

Jio is collaborating with Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay for solutions based on generative pre-trained transformers/large language models for key business verticals such as telecom and retail.

In addition to the Bharat GPT initiative, Ambani also spoke about Jio’s ambitious entry into television technology. He revealed that the company has been actively developing its own operating system (OS) for televisions, broadening its product range beyond telecommunications. Ambani emphasized the comprehensive strategy in launching this TV OS, which will further the company’s expansion in media, commerce, communication, and devices.
