Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly set to meet LG CEO Cho Joo-Wan in South Korea on February 28, according to Hankyung, a Korean publication. The two top executives will get together to finalize details surrounding the deal under which LG will manufacture the Quest Pro 2 XR headset.
Both parties want to release the next-gen Quest Pro XR headset by the first quarter 2025. One of the major discussion points is how this deadline can be achieved.
The report adds we could see the Meta Quest Pro 2 switch to LG’s custom webOS as a software experience. This is not set in stone yet, but it will be paired with Meta’s on-device AI capabilities if this does happen. The headset is expected to be priced around $2,000. This will make it more expensive than the current-gen offering but still cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro.
Zuckerberg is further said to discuss how Meta’s AI tech can be implemented in various LG electronics, home appliances, and other products.
Meta vs Apple: The Battle Is On
The rumours of Meta teaming up with LG for the next-gen Quest Pro headset have surfaced in the past as well. Both companies are believed to be working on a high-performance XR headset that can compete with the Apple Vision Pro. The latter went on sale in the United States earlier this year amidst much fanfare and excitement among tech enthusiasts.
Interestingly, Zuckerberg also tried the Apple Vision Pro to compare it against the Quest 3. He then posted a video to share his opinion in the public domain. Of course, he declared Meta’s Quest 3 the “best product. Period” for obvious reasons.
One thing to note is that while LG and Meta are targeting the first quarter of 2025 for the Quest Pro 2 release, Apple could also release the Vision Pro successor in the same year. It is quite possible Apple will fix various issues plaguing the first-generation product. Reports have talked about how people returned the Apple Vision Pro citing issues such as eye strain, headaches, and motion sickness after more than ten minutes of usage.
The exact details regarding what to expect from these future XR devices are unknown. But the fight between Meta and Apple is undoubtedly on and will intensify in the future.
