Rumours of the LG Rollable launching this year have been around. While we wait for the official confirmation, LG has filed a design patent for a rollable smartphone. The images attached in the patent document reveal an identical design language to that of the LG Rollable. It shows that a normal smartphone expanding the display to offer more screen. The patent also reveals a pop-up camera mechanism when the display expands. Let’s take a look at the LG design patent for its upcoming rollable smartphone.

LG files patent for a rollable display smartphone with a pop-up camera module; likely to be LG Rollable

LG has filed a new design patent. The patent images reveal a rollable display that expands to offer more screen, much like the LG Rollable.

Upfront, the patented device is like any other rectangular smartphone. However, it is capable of expanding the display from the right edge to offer more estate. This is quite similar to the LG Rollable that was showcased last year. The images also reveal a vertical bar on the left side of the rear panel housing the camera sensors.

From the patented images, it seems like this rear camera module will pop out on the left when the display is expanded.

The patent images are slightly similar to a previous LG patent that was filed at the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The patent images of the smartphone showcased thin edges in the display and it can be easily pulled out from the left side to enlarge the display. When unfolded, the screen is 40 percent larger than its compact size. We have also noticed the rear camera module placed at the top left corner of the rear panel aligned vertically along with an LED flash. The patent images also showed a large rectangular screen on the rear panel that could be used for clicking selfies or making video calls.

The launch date of the LG Rollable smartphone is unknown at the moment. A recent report claimed that the LG Rollable launch will be hosted after September 2021, a 6-month delay from its rumoured March 2021 launch.
