  • Google announced its plans to introduce the ‘Made in India’ Pixel 8 last year.

Make in India Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro are all set to hit the shelves soon as Google has reportedly partnered with Dixon Technologies in India. Back in February, a report claimed that Google is setting up a manufacturing facility in the southern part of the country to decentralise its supply chain from China. Here’s all you need to know about the latest development.

Made in India Pixel 8 Series Coming Soon

A report by the Economic Times suggests that Google has already started manufacturing the latest Pixel 8 series in India. Notably, Google was the only major global smartphone brand that hasn’t joined India’s ‘Made in India’ drive. However, the company announced last year that it will start making the Pixel 8 in India in 2024.

Dixon Technologies has reportedly started the trial production and the first batch of Made in India Pixel 8 series models are expected to hit the market in September. According to the report, Dixon Technologies plans to manufacture 1,00,000 units per month to export 25-30% make-in-India devices.

The ET report reveals that Padget Electronics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dixon Technologies, will manufacture the Pixel devices in India. The subsidiary recently signed an agreement with Compal Electronics, a Taiwan-based global manufacturing partner for Google products.

Google’s decision to start manufacturing locally seems to be driven by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile phones in India and the competitive production price offered by Dixon Technologies.

The Pixel smartphones have been priced a little higher than the competition and the latest example is the Pixel 8a, which is also more expensive than its predecessor, the Pixel 7a. It remains to be seen how the ‘Made in India’ Pixels benefit people in India and if the prices of the Pixel 8 series will go down. There’s also no word on the other models that can be made in India soon.
