India is hosting the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023 in New Delhi. It commenced on December 12 and is scheduled to conclude on December 14. Addressing the opening session of the GPAI, PM Modi declared that India is poised to initiate a new mission that will integrate the capabilities of AI with healthcare and agriculture. He outlined the goal of establishing resilient AI computing power within the nation, enabling enhanced support for innovators and startups.

A key aim behind this mission will be to promote AI applications in critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education. The goal is to use artificial intelligence to drive innovation and efficiency in these critical areas, contributing to the country’s overall growth and development.

Inclusivity and Values at the Core of AI Development: Govt

PM Modi emphasised the significance of inclusivity in AI technology, as well as the importance of progress guided by human and democratic principles. In his speech, he emphasised that the inclusivity of AI development will have a direct impact on its consequences, demanding a balance of emotions, ethics, and efficiency.

While acknowledging AI’s potential as a strong development tool, PM Modi expressed concern about its dual nature, highlighting the issues faced by technologies like deep fake, cybersecurity dangers, and bad actors’ misuse of AI techniques. The cautious approach draws attention to the importance of responsible and ethical AI deployment.

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed India’s commitment to utilising AI for inclusive growth. The goal includes native language-based citizen services, accessible healthcare, and precision agriculture techniques to increase crop yields.

The Minister of state for electronics and information technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasised the rapid speed of AI research in the recent months. He also highlighted the necessity of transparency, bias-free algorithms, and user trust in successfully integrating AI into different industries.

What is the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)?

The GPAI, comprising 29 countries, aims to guide the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence globally. Grounded in principles such as human rights, diversity, and innovation, the alliance marks a pivotal moment in international collaboration to shape the future of AI.

The GPAI India meet holds significance as the first major event under India’s leadership as the new council chair. Having taken over from France in November, India reaffirms its commitment to harnessing technology, particularly AI, for the welfare of people globally.
