It is 2024, so it is only a matter of time before the Apple Vision Pro Extended Reality (XR) headset hits the stores. It promises to deliver spatial computing XR experiences in a way they have not been done before. Now Qualcomm is also ready for the competition as it has just announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor. It is the company’s most powerful XR chip so far. It promises to deliver leading XR experiences in collaboration with Samsung and Google.

Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Brings More CPU and GPU Power

Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 XR chip, which is an enhanced version of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip. XR2 Gen 2 currently powers many AR/VR headsets, including the current-gen Meta Quest 3. The new chip brings incremental improvements including CPU and GPU performance.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is capable of supporting 4.3K resolution per eye at up to 90 frames per second. It means users can expect crisper and better image clarity while enjoying XR experiences. In comparison, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 supports only up to 3K resolution per eye.

Qualcomm is promising a 20% increased CPU frequency and 15% GPU frequency with the new XR chip. It simply means more power than ever on headsets featuring the new chipset. The processor can support 12 or more concurrent cameras for superior tracking of users and their movements.

These are the only upgrades you will get with the new chip over the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor. If you already have a device packed with that chip, you will not be missing out on a lot. Other specifications and features remain unchanged like WiFi 7/WiFi 6/WiFi 6E support, next-gen Spectra ISP, and 12ms full colour video see-through.

Qualcomm has also unveiled a new MR and VR reference platform for developers. It will help them fast-track their development of new devices powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 or Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip. Qualcomm is also working with at least five hardware manufacturers, including HTC.

The new XR chip announcement also talked about Qualcomm’s collaboration with Samsung and Google. The three big names are working together to deliver new XR experiences, but exact details remain unknown. There have been reports of Samsung developing a new Galaxy XR headset, though the brand is yet to confirm the same.

Inkang Song, VP and Head of the Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics said in a press statement with Qualcomm, “With Samsung’s mobile expertise and our joint commitment, we aim to create the best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users.” Since the Galaxy S24 series launch event is just around the corner, it would not be surprising if Samsung made some XR-related announcements on the stage.
