Samsung has filed for a new patent for what appears to be a VR headset. We, at MSP, have found patent documentation, which suggests that Samsung’s VR headset could be as good as Apple’s Vision Pro, and offer similar features. It also reveals that the headset may also have infrared sensors for augmented reality.

Samsung’s New Patent Hints at a Powerful VR Headset

The patent has been filed at the Korean Intellectual Property Office with the description, “Communication methods and apparatus utilizing avatars in virtual space.” According to the document, the headset can display virtual avatars to the user, by using multiple sensors to collect information from surroundings.

However, the patent does not mention the word headset anywhere. Instead, it hints at any gadget that can be worn by the user. The data strongly points towards a VR headset but it’s not disclosed clearly, possibly for confidential reasons.

The patent further reveals that Samsung will integrate its headset seamlessly with other products, like wireless headphones and the smartwatch. It suggests that the headset can gather information like heart rate and calories consumed from an external paired device, and form a virtual avatar. This could allow users to share real-time workouts and exercise details with other people.

Furthermore, the headset may also feature multiple sensors like an accelerometer, gyroscope, camera module, infrared sensor, etc. to track the movements and position of the user in real time. The data can be used display an interactive graphic user interface (GUI) where users can view a digital avatar, and interact with their surroundings.

The documents also mention the possibility of an integrated navigation system, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth support. The device may also have its processor, GPU, and NPU to manage this data. This will be backed by a rechargeable battery. However, the position of the battery placement in the device is unclear.

The concept appears similar to Apple’s Vision Pro, which uses a few sensors to create a virtual world inside the headset. However, Samsung’s integration with external devices like a smartwatch and wireless headphones could make it more advanced and feature-packed.

Samsung has not officially announced the development of a new VR headset. It is important to note that these details are merely part of the filed patent, and the final product could be completely different. It will be interesting to see how Samsung responds to Apple with its upcoming VR headset.
