Highlights
  • Samsung is developing a new square-shaped device with a screen that can extend from either end.
  • The patent does not explicitly mention smartphones, so there is a possibility it could be applicable to other devices such as smart TVs, AR devices, or entirely new gadgets.
  • Samsung is also exploring other display advancements, including a roller-design laptop and a third type of foldable smartphone with a dual-folding display.

The typical glass slab smartphones have reached their zenith, compelling companies to innovate with their devices. South Korean conglomerates such as Samsung and LG lead the way in these innovations. However, with LG exiting the smartphone space, Samsung is now at the forefront of introducing innovative devices.

After successfully spearheading the foldable smartphone trend in the industry, Samsung is currently developing a new square-shaped smartphone showcasing an extendable display.

Samsung’s new Device with Extendable Display

A new patent was found online showing a small square device with a screen that can slide out from either end. This comes after Samsung had patents for two technologies called Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel in Europe about a month ago. These technologies were described as making screens expand for smartphones. Now, Samsung is working on a similar idea in the US, although they don’t use the same terms in the patent.

The discovery of this patent was made by Website Rating and David Kowalski from xleaks7. The report shares a PDF of the patent, mentioning that Samsung Display is the one applying for it, and the date of filing is June 22, 2023.

According to the patent, Samsung is trying to protect a new display technology and this kind of screen can extend in different directions. The big improvement here seems the metal layer at the end of the sliding display, which will protect it from bouncing back too much. This is meant to stop the screen from cracking because of the metal hitting it over and over, thus making the device stronger. The patent also says this technology can work with both OLED and LCD displays.

It’s important to keep in mind that the patent doesn’t directly talk about square-shaped smartphones. Which means it could also be used for smart TVs, AR devices, or a completely new gadget.

Samsung’s Other Innovation in the Display Tech

Samsung is also working on a host of other display technologies for its smartphones and even laptops. Recently, a new Samsung laptop appeared on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), a patent platform.

Based on the images and descriptions shared on the WIPO patent website, the forthcoming Samsung laptop will feature a roller design. This entails the laptop being accommodated within a cylindrical roller.

Furthermore, the South Korean giant is also working on a third type of foldable smartphone with a dual-folding display. Recently, a new Samsung device appeared on the same WIPO platform, suggesting that the company could be working on a smartphone with a screen that stretches to the right.
