These days, we see the majority of innovation in display tech. We saw all sorts of displays at the recently concluded MWC 2024, where we witnessed transparent displays, bendable displays, and more. Now, it seems like Samsung is working on a new flexible display that rolls up.
Samsung’s New Flexible Roll-Up Display Technology
Today, the team at MySmartPrice spotted a new patent on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent did not explicitly reveal whether it concerns a smartphone, tablet, or TV.
The drawings give us a glimpse into how the upcoming device will work in FIG. 1A, it’s closed up. Then, in FIG. 1B, it’s starting to open, like stretching out. FIG. 1C shows it fully open. FIGS. 2A and 2B show the screen when it’s fully open. FIGS. 3A and 3B focus on the screen itself. FIG. 4A is about the hinge when it’s open. FIG. 4B shows the hinge from the side when it’s open. And finally, FIG. 4C shows the hinge when the device is closed.
Samsung Secures Another Patent for Triple Foldabale Display
We have identified another patent from the South Korean Conglomerate on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). It’s about a smartphone that features a triple foldable display.
As we can see in the drawings the device has three display areas: a flexible display encompassing a primary display, a secondary display area, and a thid display area stretching between the primary and secondary displays. According to the patent document it can be folded so that the main display faces either one of the smaller displays or unfolded so all three displays are flat.
Interestingly there’s only one hinge, allowing it to fold and unfold smoothly. However, There could be different versions or designs of this device.
Samsung’s Other Developments in Display Technology
However, this is not Samsung’s first rollable display. Recently, a patent appeared on the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), which gave a glimpse into the display’s cylindrical roller design.
But don’t count on having a smartphones with rollable or tri foldable displays anytime soon. Samsung files several patent applications time and again, and just because they have a patent doesn’t necessarily mean that the idea will be in a future product.
