Jio and Airtel Continues to Gain Subscribers in March as vi Lose Some

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its Telecom Subscribers Data for March 2024. According to the report, Jio has reigned supreme and has acquired the most subscribers. This is closely followed by the rival telecom operator Airtel. Let’s look at the findings of the latest TRAI subscribers report.

Jio Gains Its Highest Number of Users in March 2024

Jio added 2.14 million users in March 2024, its highest in 10 months. While the telecom operator continues to lead the market in user acquisition, the number was down compared to 3.41 million in February 2024.

On the other hand, Airtel gained 1.75 million users in March 2024. This is an improvement compared to the 1.54 million users gained in February 2024. However, Vi or Vodafone Idea continued losing subscribers. The telco lost 684,530 users in March after gaining 47,247 users in February 2024.

It is also revealed that Jio gained active subscribers (VLR) with 430.36 million in December while Airtel got 385.41 million users. The report also reveals that Jio has surpassed China Mobile to become the world’s largest mobile operator when it comes to data traffic consumption.

Jio grabbed a 40.30% market share, followed by Airtel with 33.10% and Vi with an 18.86% market share. The market share of private and PSU telcos was 92.26% and 7.74%, respectively. The rest of the market share belonged to BSNL, MTNL, and Reliance Communication.

As for the PSU, BSNL faced a major blow as around 2.3 million users left the company to shift to other telcos. This is BSNL’s highest monthly subscriber loss so far.
