Whirlpool has launched its new Xpert Care front-load washing machine range in India, positioning it around a problem that rarely gets addressed directly in the appliance category: overwashing. While most washing machines continue to compete on stain removal and spin speeds, Whirlpool is shifting focus to fabric longevity, introducing Ozone Air Refresh Technology as a way to reduce unnecessary wash cycles and extend the life of clothes.
The company's argument is straightforward. A large share of everyday clothing, especially office wear, occasion wear, and worn-once garments, does not actually need a full wash. Yet, in the absence of alternatives, these clothes are repeatedly washed, accelerating colour fading, shrinkage, and fabric wear. Whirlpool's Xpert Care range is designed to offer a middle path between washing and dry cleaning.
How Ozone Air Refresh Works
The headline feature of the Xpert Care range is Ozone Air Refresh Technology, which refreshes clothes without using water or detergent. An in-built ozoniser converts atmospheric oxygen into ozone, which circulates inside the drum to neutralise odour-causing molecules and bacteria. At the end of the cycle, the ozone is converted back into oxygen and released.
According to Whirlpool, the technology has been tested for up to 50 continuous refresh cycles on dry-clean-only garments such as blazers, sarees, trousers, and embellished outfits, with claims of zero shrinkage and zero colour fading under controlled test conditions. The company also states that the ozone cycle can eliminate up to 99.9% of bacteria, allergens, dust mites, and viruses, while removing odours such as cigarette smoke and cooking smells
This positions the refresh cycle as a practical option for post-party outfits, lightly worn office clothing, or seasonal garments taken out of storage, rather than as a replacement for regular washing.
Conventional Washing Still Remains Central
Despite the emphasis on ozone-based care, the Xpert Care range continues to focus on conventional wash performance. Whirlpool claims the machines can remove up to 100 tough dried stains, including common Indian household stains, without manual pre-treatment. The Fresh Care+ feature is designed to keep clothes fresh and wrinkle-free for up to six hours after a wash cycle ends, using periodic drum movement and steam to prevent odour build-up.
Other features include Steam Wash for enhanced hygiene, 6th Sense Technology that adapts wash parameters based on fabric and load, Zero Pressure Fill for areas with low water pressure, and a Smart Wave Drum designed for gentler fabric handling. The machines offer a 1400 RPM spin speed and a wide drum opening for easier loading.
The Xpert Care range is manufactured at Whirlpool's Pondicherry facility and uses Inverter and Direct Drive technology for quieter operation and reduced vibration. Whirlpool is offering a 5-year comprehensive warranty on the product and a 10-year warranty on the motor.
Pricing and Availability
The Whirlpool Xpert Care front-load washing machine range is available across offline retail stores and online platforms in India. Prices start at ₹24,500, placing the range in the competitive mid-to-premium front-load segment.
A Meaningful Shift in the Category
From an MSP perspective, Whirlpool's Xpert Care launch stands out less for raw specifications and more for its attempt to change usage behaviour. Front-load washing machines have long promised better fabric care, but few have directly addressed the issue of unnecessary washing.
Ozone-based refresh does not solve every laundry need, but it introduces a practical use case that aligns with how urban consumers actually treat their clothes today. If communicated clearly at retail and backed by consistent real-world performance, this feature could help Whirlpool differentiate itself in a crowded segment where incremental upgrades have become harder to justify.
At its starting price, the success of Xpert Care will depend on whether consumers see ozone refresh as a daily convenience rather than a novelty. If that happens, Whirlpool may have found a new way to add real value to the front-load washing machine category without chasing headline specs alone.
