Nothing has officially introduced the Phone (3a) Community Edition

Nothing just pulled the curtain back on the Phone (3a) Community Edition, and once again, the company is proving that “community” isn’t just a marketing buzzword for them. This is the result of their annual project, where they literally hand the keys to the factory over to the fans.

Instead of just asking for feedback after a phone is already built, Nothing flips the script. They invite creators and designers to shape the hardware, the software, and even the ads. Building on the massive success of last year’s model (which actually snagged a design award), the 2025 edition cements Nothing's reputation as the only tech brand brave enough to let the internet build its next product.

A New Model of Co-Creation That Goes Beyond Feedback Loops

This year, the project saw over 700 submissions pouring in. We aren’t just talking about sketches on a napkin; people submitted detailed hardware blueprints, software concepts, and full-blown marketing pitches. It shows a huge shift: people don’t just want to buy tech anymore; they want to be part of making it.

While Apple and Samsung usually lock their design teams in a bunker, Nothing blurs the line between “fan” and “employee.” After sifting through the entries, four winners were picked to turn their ideas into a real product you can actually buy:

  • Hardware Design: Emre Kayganacl
  • Accessory Design: Ambrogio Tacconi & Louis Aymond
  • Lock Screen Clock & Wallpaper: Jad Zock
  • Marketing Campaign: Sushruta Sarkar

The hardware winner, Emre, went for a vibe that hits right in the nostalgia centres. It draws inspiration from late-90s and early-2000s handheld gaming consoles – think translucent plastics and playful colours – while keeping that signature Nothing transparency. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the boring glass slabs everyone else is selling.

There was also a new category this year: Accessories. The winners came up with “Nothing Dice” – a set of dice using the brand’s dot-matrix font. It's a small, fun object that proves tech accessories don’t always have to be cases or cables.

These winners didn’t just get a pat on the back. They spent months collaborating directly with Nothing's professional teams in London to make their concepts production-ready. Plus, Nothing refined the process this year by offering a £1,000 cash prize per category, putting some actual money behind their support for creators.

A Bigger Strategy: Community as Stakeholder, Not Spectator

This phone is part of a much bigger picture. Nothing is trying to build a company where the community acts like a decentralised team. They already have a Community Board Observer who sits in on actual board meetings.

And just last week, they opened a $5 million community investment round. This lets regular fans invest at the same $1.3 billion valuation as the big institutional investors. That is incredibly rare in consumer tech.

It's a smart move. People are tired of big corporations deciding what's “cool” behind closed doors. Nothing's approach feels more open-source and risky, but that's exactly why it resonates. For buyers, the Phone (3a) Community Edition isn't just a limited-edition recolour; it's a device built with people, not just for them. Another thing that we appreciate about the company is that it continues to think on its feet and bring in changes in design.
