Apple iPhone 13 launch is tipped for September 2021. Even before the 2021 iPhone models launch, details of the 2022 iPhones have surfaced online. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will launch four new iPhone models in 2022 with 6.1 and 6.7-inch screens. This means that there will be no 5.4-inch iPhone mini next year. The MacRumors report also suggests significant camera improvements in the iPhone 14 models. According to the report, the high-end models will come with a 48MP primary camera sensor. The current line of iPhones has a 12MP main sensor. Let’s take a look at the 2022 iPhone leaks, specifications and other details.
Apple to join the megapixel war by launching 2022 iPhones with a 48MP camera
Apple iPhone 13 is expected to launch in September 2021. Ahead of the launch, details of the 2022 iPhone models have leaked.
According to Kuo, Apple will continue to launch four new iPhone models in 2022. However, it will not launch a mini version of the iPhone next year. Instead, the company plans to launch two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch models. Apple introduced the iPhone 12 mini last year with a 5.4-inch display. However, the sales haven’t been as impressive and it looks like the company will discontinue the compact iPhone model next year.
Apple will also introduce some major camera improvements in the iPhone 14. Kuo believes that the high-end 2022 iPhone models will come with a 48MP primary camera. The main camera will support pixel-binning with a 12MP output. The top-end iPhones will also support 8K video recording.
“In terms of pixel size, the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and new 2H22 iPhone are about 1.7um, 2um, and 1.25um, respectively. We believe that the new 2H22 iPhone may support direct 48MP output and 12MP (four cells merge output mode) output simultaneously. With 12MP output, the CIS pixel size of the new 2H22 iPhone increases to about 2.5um, which is significantly larger than the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and larger than existing Android phones, and close to the DSC level. We believe that the camera quality of the new 2H22 iPhone will elevate mobile phone camera photography to a new level,” Kuo said.
He further adds that the 48MP camera will create videos and images “more suitable for AR/MR devices.”
He had previously reported that the Pro models will come with a hole-punch display. However, if the production yields are good enough, all iPhone 14 models will come with a hole-punch display. Apple will also introduce an under-display fingerprint scanner in the 2023 iPhone models, according to Kuo. The high-end 2023 iPhone will also feature a periscope telephoto camera and a fullscreen display without a notch or any hole, the analyst added.
