Kirin 985 SoC Tipped to Debut with Honor 30 Series on April 15 with Support for Largest Image Sensor

Almost everyone interested in the smartphone industry is aware of Huawei’s flagship-grade Kirin 990 SoC. This chipset was announced late last year as the successor to the older Kirin 980 chipset. Before the launch of the Kirin 990, however, there were talks about Huawei reportedly working on the Kirin 985 as well. However, after the company decided to launch the Kirin 990, almost everyone assumed that the Kirin 985 was indeed the Kirin 990. Recent reports, however, seem to indicate that isn’t really the case.

A recent series of tweets by popular leakster OnLeaks seem to indicate that Huawei indeed has a new processor called the Kirin 985 that will be announced officially when the company launches the Honor 30 series on April 15, as previously reported. Details around the Kirin 985 remain sketchy at this point, but it is a given that it will be quite similar to the Kirin 990 and that it will also be a true flagship-grade chipset. If we are to believe @OnLeaks’ recent tweets, the Kirin 985 will feature an upgraded ISP for the image sensor and will feature support for larger image sensors.

The Kirin 985 is expected to be first used on Honor’s upcoming devices under the Honor 30 series. We had previously reported about the launch of the Honor 30 Pro a few days ago, and as per current information, there could be three devices under this lineup that includes the Honor 30, Honor 30 Pro, and the Honor 30 Pro +. The top-end Honor 30 Pro model is expected to feature the Kirin 990 SoC while the lower-priced Honor 30 Pro could use this Kirin 985 chipset. As for the Honor 30, there is a chance that this phone would come powered by the Kirin 820 chipset because it is a mid-range SoC that also happens to be 5G capable.

Per recent reports, the Honor 30 series could feature a large Sony IMX 7-series image sensor. Details surrounding this image sensor remain sketch at this point, and we should get more information in the days to come. The lower end Honor 30 series is already known to feature
