Sony PS5 Pro Specifications Leak Hints at Significant Performance Upgrade, September 2024 Launch

Third-party studios have started to receive PS5 Pro development kits.

  • The PlayStation 5 Pro is codenamed Project Trinity.
  • The PS5 Pro is said to deliver stable upscaled 4K output.
  • The PS5 Pro is tipped to come with a new GPU codenamed Viola.

We have been hearing rumours about the existence of the PlayStation 5 Pro aka PS5 Pro for a long time. It will be the mid-cycle hardware refresh for the PlayStation 5 just like PlayStation 4 Pro was released after the PlayStation 4. The rumour mill is buzzing once again as a new set of PS5 Pro specifications has leaked alongside potential launch date details. Here is what is known so far.

Sony PlayStation 5 Pro Specifications Leaked

The latest rumoured PlayStation 5 Pro aka PS5 Pro specifications have been shared by a user on ResetEra forums. The user claims the upcoming PS5 Pro will feature a new GPU codenamed Viola. It will be fabricated on TSMC’s 4NP process node and have a 2GHz frequency target. There will be AMD RDNA3 architecture and 30WGPs when fully enabled. However, retail units of the console are said to get only 28WGPs.

The PS5 Pro CPU is tipped to continue with AMD Zen 2 architecture but with a peak frequency of 4.4GHz. The console is said to be a culmination of three key technologies: fast storage, accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling. It is the reason users will get 16GB DDR6 memory with 576GB/s bandwidth.

The user claims Sony’s goal is to deliver stable upscaled 4K output with more than 30fps on the PS5 Pro. He adds that the PS5 Pro launch could happen in September 2024 which is two months earlier than the previously rumoured November 2024 launch timeline.

When one of the X users asked Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson about the accuracy of the latest leak, he replied: “Can’t comment on other peoples leaks because I don’t know. Internally, Sony is expecting full specs to leak this month because of dev ket distribution to 3rd party studios.”

Nevertheless, you should always take a leak with a pinch of salt until something official or more concrete evidence is made public. Sony has yet to reveal or even acknowledge the PS5 Pro’s existence which is understandable.

The original PlayStation 5 was launched in 2020 and became a unicorn in the beginning due to supply chain issues and the COVID-19 pandemic. Sony announced a slimmer version of the PlayStation 5 about a couple of months ago. It comes with a new design, 1TB storage space, and a detachable disk drive.

The new version has 30% less volume than the original version. It is also 18% and 24% lighter than the physical and digital versions respectively. Sony has priced the slimmer PS5 at USD 449.99 and USD 499.99 respectively. Unfortunately, there are no words on the Indian launch and pricing yet but we will keep you in the loop.
