Paytm’s New Soundbox with Tap-to-Pay Support

Paytm’s soundboxes have been a revolutionary product in the digital payments ecosystem of India as they provide real-time confirmation of successful transactions. However, these soundboxes would only work with regular UPI payments (using a credit card too) and did not support direct payments from credit or debit cards.

The new Paytm soundbox now comes with an embedded NFC reader that can be used to accept payments from any credit card, debit card, or NFC-supported Android smartphone. This will allow vendors to receive payments without needing a POS machine.

Interestingly, the National Payments Corporation of India introduced UPI Lite X, which supports tap-to-pay transactions using UPI Lite. As the new soundbox from Paytm supports NFC payments, it also becomes compatible with UPI Lite X.

Paytm’s partnership with Axis Bank for a new nodal account helped the company rescue its merchant QR business, and the Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company is now embracing this segment with new products.

In addition to this NFC-enabled soundbox, Paytm launched a new UPI soundbox with an improved speaker. The company says that this new soundbox is louder and clearer, and offers longer battery life of up to 10 days. It also comes with 4G connectivity.
