Xiaomi has just launched a new smartphone in its selfie-focused Redmi Y series – the Redmi Y3. It comes as the successor to the Redmi Y2 that was launched last year. According to the brand, the Redmi Y3 is focused towards the youth. Let us check out its price, availability, and specifications.

Xiaomi Redmi Y3 Price in India

The Redmi Y3 comes in two variants. The base variant has 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, and it costs INR 9,999. The higher-specced variant has 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, and it costs INR 11,999. At least initially, the Redmi Y3 will be available through flash sales. And the first flash sale will be held on 30th April at 12 PM. The Redmi Y3 will be available on Mi online store and Amazon India. The brand has also announced that the device will be in local stores (Mi Studio, Mi Stores, Mi Preferred Partners), but it has announced the precise date for offline availability.

Xiaomi Redmi Y3 Specifications

Cameras

The highlight feature of the Redmi Y3 is its 32MP front-facing camera, which has a 1/2.8-inch sensor size. In comparison, the Redmi Y2 had a 16MP camera with 1/3.1-inch sensor size. So, the Redmi Y3 has not only a higher resolution but also a larger sensor size than its predecessor. This should theoretically offer better picture quality.

The front-facing camera has an auto-HDR mode for better dynamic range. It packs AI Beautify 4.0 mode, which enhances the overall appearance of the person’s face by removing blemishes, brightening the skin tone, and adjusting the texture of the skin. The camera features 4-in-1 pixel-binning technology for lowlight conditions, meaning, it will combine the information from four pixels into one to produce an 8MP image. According to Xiaomi, the 8MP image with pixel-binning offers significantly better lowlight image quality than the 32MP image. To make lowlight images even better, there is a screen flash option. The front-facing camera also features Portrait Selfie, Full HD video recording with EIS, and 360-degree AI face unlock.

Coming to the rear camera, the Redmi Y3 sports a dual-camera setup, which has a 12MP primary camera sensor, and a 2MP depth-sensor. The rear camera features AI scene detection, AI Portrait mode, and inbuilt Google Lens. In terms of video recording, the rear camera of the Redmi Y3 can do Full HD videos at 60 frames per second. And the video recording even features EIS.

Display

The Redmi Y3 features a 6.26-inch IPS LCD with HD+ resolution. The display has Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which in my opinion, is a great feature for a smartphone of this price. According to Xiaomi, the display has 450 nits brightness. The display, of course, has a nearly bezel-less design and a Dot Notch.

Processor, RAM, Storage, and Software

The Redmi Y3 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor. In case you do not know, the Snapdragon 632 is based on 14nm fabrication process, and it features an octa-core Kryo CPU and Adreno 509 GPU. The device comes in two configurations – 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The smartphone, as you might expect, comes with Android 9 Pie operating system, which has MIUI 10 customization.

Battery and Connectivity

One major complaint with the Redmi Y2 was its small, 3080mAh battery. Well, Xiaomi has taken the feedback and equipped the Redmi Y3 with a larger, 4000mAh battery. There is no fast charging option here, but at this price point, one shouldn’t even expect it. Speaking of battery, Xiaomi will ship the device with a power adapter that will protect against voltage spikes up to 380V. This is an excellent feature for the Indian market. In terms of connectivity, the Redmi Y3 retains the same triple-card slot and the infrared blaster from the Redmi Y2. The device also comes with dual-4G, dual-VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Other Features

In spite of being an affordable smartphone, the Redmi Y3 is a splash-resistant device, for which, it has sealed ports and P2i coating. Xiaomi has also equipped the device with ‘Dual Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet,’ which according to the brand, will decrease the temperature of the device up to 2 degree Celsius. Needless to say, the smartphone features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Redmi Y3 comes in three color variants, Elegant Blue, Prime Black, and Bold Red.
