Qualcomm has launched its latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, to redefine performance and user experience in mobile devices. Built on a refined 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 claims a 36% boost in CPU speeds and an 11% improvement in GPU performance compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The chip features Qualcomm's custom-built Oryon CPUs clocked up to 3.8 GHz and includes the Adreno 840 GPU, which supports advanced gaming capabilities and efficient power use.

On the AI front, Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU provides a 46% uplift in AI tasks, enabling faster and smarter on-device processing. The chipset also supports a triple-20-bit AI camera ISP, capable of handling cameras up to 320MP, and video capture up to 4K at 120fps. It includes integrated X80 5G modem technology, supporting both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands for fast connectivity. The first devices featuring this chip will appear soon, starting with the OnePlus Ace 6T, branded as OnePlus 15R in India, and other brands like iQOO, Motorola, and Vivo are expected to follow.
Qualcomm has long been a leader in the smartphone chipset market, especially in premium devices. Its Snapdragon series is known for balancing performance, efficiency, and advanced features that appeal to high-end users. In India, Qualcomm chips dominate the high-end segment with brands like OnePlus, Samsung, and Xiaomi favouring Snapdragon-powered devices for flagship models. The company is also expanding its reach beyond smartphones, supplying chips for automotive, IoT devices, and other tech sectors, broadening its influence in the technology ecosystem.
However, Qualcomm faces stiff competition from MediaTek in India, which has significantly raised its game in recent years. MediaTek offers powerful chipsets, often at a more competitive price point, making it a favourite in the mid-range and budget smartphone segments. This strategy has helped MediaTek capture substantial market share, challenging Qualcomm's dominance, especially where affordability is a key factor. MediaTek's improvements in 5G support, AI capability, and gaming performance have closed some of the gaps with Qualcomm, intensifying the competition in the Indian market.
Looking back, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 released last year was built on a similar 3nm process and featured an 8-core CPU with slightly higher clock speeds, an Adreno 830 GPU, and a 60 TOPS AI engine. It supported up to 200MP camera sensors and offered video recording capabilities up to 8K at 30fps. The 8 Gen 4 focused on pushing flagship performance with improvements in gaming, connectivity, and AI workloads. Devices now running on the 8 Gen 4 include many premium smartphones released since late 2024, reinforcing Qualcomm's stronghold at the top tier of the market.
In summary, while Qualcomm continues to lead in premium mobile processing with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, MediaTek's aggressive and improved offerings ensure the competitive landscape in India remains dynamic. Qualcomm's broadening approach beyond smartphones and its delivery of leading-edge technologies shows it still commands influence, but MediaTek's advancements are a clear sign that it is no longer just a challenger but an equal competitor in many segments.
