Elon Musk, Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of X (formerly Twitter), has announced the rollout of Community Notes in India. The feature was initially announced for global markets in April 2022.

Everything to Know About Community Notes

X (formerly Twitter) announced the Community Notes feature to combat misinformation on the platform. Users can apply to contribute to the notes to fact-check misleading tweets. The announcement is significant given it is taking place just two months ahead of the General Elections in India.

Any user who meets the eligibility criteria set by the microblogging platform can sign up for the programme. The users who are approved for contributing will gain the ability to rate notes and will be able to write notes over time. Here are the criteria that were set by X (formerly Twitter) to apply for the program.

  • No X Rules violations since January 1, 2023.
  • Joined X at least six months ago.
  • A verified phone number and the phone number must be from a trusted phone carrier.
  • Not associated with other Community Notes accounts.

The post labelled Community Notes will not be removed unless it violates the X Rules, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policies. Here are the steps to write a note in the post.

  1. Select any post on X (formerly Twitter) that you think is misleading.
  2. Tap on the three dots and choose the Write a Community Note option.
  3. Users can also report misleading Community Notes by selecting the three-dot menu on a note and then selecting the Report option.
  4. The notes can be deleted by the user who contributed to them at any time.

X adds that the programme is transparent, and the algorithm is open source and publicly available on GitHub. However, users should keep in mind that there are certain restrictions on the number of notes that can be contributed within 24 hours.
