Samsung Confirms No Android 14 Update for Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 Series

It was an error from Samsung's end that led to the confusion about the update situation.

  • Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 6.0 Android 14 update for eligible devices.
  • Samsung accidentally mentioned Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 phones among supported devices.
  • The error has now been corrected by the officials.

Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 users were going about their day until an announcement from Samsung suggested they could be receiving a new major software update. This caught everyone’s attention as both of these lineups were not supposed to receive new OS updates. As things have turned out and many also feared, it was a false alarm from the South Korean tech giant. Both these phones are not receiving any new updates from the company.

Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 Android 14 Update Mention Was a Mistake

Samsung has officially confirmed to 9to5Google folks in a statement that it made a mistake in mentioning the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series. None of these devices will receive the Android 14 update as suggested by a previous press release from the company.

Here is the complete statement, “The wrong disclaimer appeared in the “One UI 6 Update: 7 Tips for Making the Most of the AI Camera on your Galaxy” press release and we apologize for any confusion it created. We have revised the disclaimer and have removed S20 series, Note20 series Fold2, Flip 5G and Flip LTE from the eligible device list receiving One UI 6.”

The whole confusion began when Samsung released a post about the new One UI 6.0 camera features coming to supported devices. The footnote of the post mentioned a list of eligible devices that accidentally also included Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 20, and a few more older-generation devices. The error has now been fixed and the footnote list has been updated to include only eligible devices.

Both Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series phones launched in 2020. These devices shipped with Android 10 and were promised to receive three major OS upgrades. Samsung has fulfilled that promise by releasing Android 11, Android 12, and Android 13 updates for these devices. It is important to note that only OS updates have stopped and they continue to receive security patch updates at regular intervals.

One UI 6.0 is the latest major OS update from Samsung which is based on Android 14. Earlier this week, its stable build rollout for the Galaxy S23 series began around the world including India. It is an update that weighs about 3GB for regular users and about 350MB for beta testers.

As one would expect, the update is packed with a number of changes and new features. It features a revamped Quick Panel, home screen and lockscreen customizations, new default font, and a better multitasking experience. It is an over-the-air (OTA) release and should reach your supported device soon. You can also check for it manually by visiting system settings.
