  • Google has yet to reveal a specific deadline for the VPN shutdown.
  • Free VPN for Pixel users will continue to work and receive upgrades.

VPN by Google One will shut down sometime later this year. Google has begun alerting users via email and confirmed the decision to 9to5Google folks. It has not mentioned a specific deadline yet, but the shutdown will likely occur before the year ends.

Google said the decision to shut down VPN by Google One was taken as “people simply weren’t using it.” This means whatever the number of users is, it is well below the company’s expectations. It also wants the team to focus on providing more in-demand Google One features and benefits.

Pixel VPN Is Here to Stay

The good news is this decision does not affect Pixel VPN users. Google started offering free VPN service to Pixel users in 2022. The service is available on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold. These users will be able to use the free VPN through Pixel settings. The company will continue to provide upgrades and new features as well.

It is important to note that while VPN by Google and Pixel VPN services are available in multiple countries, India is not one of them. If you were waiting for Google to bring it to the Indian market, the shutdown decision means it will not happen.

In other news, Google recently unveiled a new Google One AI Premium plan priced at Rs 1,950 monthly. Gemini AI powers it and brings AI powers to Gmail, Docs, and other Workspace apps for personal accounts.
