LG introduces AI-powered appliance upgrades at IFA 2025

LG has announced the European rollout of its new smart home platform, ThinQ AI. The platform will be launched at IFA 2025 in Berlin and will be available across key markets in September. ThinQ AI combines LG's ThinQ UP and ThinQ Care services, offering appliances that improve over time through software updates and predictive maintenance. LG says the system uses AI and usage data to adapt to customer habits, deliver new features, and address potential issues before they become problems.

ThinQ UP allows appliances like washing machines and refrigerators to receive new functions through updates, helping them stay relevant to shifting user needs. ThinQ Care, meanwhile, provides smart diagnostics and early fault detection, guiding users through simple fixes and reducing downtime.

The European launch also highlights features tuned to the region's eco-conscious consumers. Washing machines get an Energy Saving Mode, while refrigerators include an AI Saving Mode to cut electricity use. Other updates aim at day-to-day convenience: washing machines now offer reminders for drum cleaning and a "Fresh Keeper" function that prevents damp clothes from smelling. Refrigerators gain a dimmed "Night View" display and a Smart Fill system for precise water dispensing. The ice dispenser can even be reconfigured to double as an extra water outlet.

Furthermore, with the help of the ThinQ app's "Share Your Ideas" feature, customers can suggest new functions that could later be developed into updates. Region-specific features are expected to be rolled out in Europe first, before expanding worldwide later in the year.

The ThinQ AI platform also reinforces LG's identity as a forward-looking, premium brand that focuses on longevity and innovation rather than frequent hardware upgrades. However, it raises interesting questions about pricing. As appliances become upgradable through software, these models could command higher upfront costs or even introduce subscription-based updates in the future. For now, LG hasn't shared details on pricing or whether such models will carry additional service costs.

At its IFA stand, LG is showcasing an interactive demo of ThinQ UP appliances along with its "Zero Labour Home" concept. The latter demonstrates how voice recognition and automation can deliver tailored appliance settings for different household routines.

Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Home Appliance Solution Company, said the launch reflects a shift in how consumers interact with appliances: "Our innovative ThinQ AI platform offers differentiated convenience and efficiency through continuous upgrades and intelligent, proactive care."

While promising, the true test will be how seamlessly these updates integrate into everyday life. LG's focus on user-driven features is a smart move in an increasingly competitive smart home market where convenience, longevity, and adaptability are becoming key selling points.
