Vivo Launches OriginOS 6 based on Android 16: Check List of Eligible Devices, Rollout Schedule

Vivo has officially launched OriginOS 6, which replaces Funtouch OS for Vivo and iQOO smartphones in the global markets, including India. The new interface brings an AI-first approach with productivity features like AI-powered voice prompts, powerful image editing functionality, and more. Vivo will also roll out the update to existing devices that are eligible for Android 16. Here’s everything that you need to know about OriginOS 6.

OriginOS Replaces Funtouch: What Has Changed?

OriginOS 6 is built over Android 16 and introduces a complete design overhaul compared to Funtouch. While the previous interface had a material design, the new look is closer to Apple’s Liquid Glass design in iOS 26. This is not surprising as Vivo’s software is known to derive inspiration from Apple to deliver a polished end-user experience.

The new OS integrates a technology called Blue River Smooth Engine, which uses super-core computing and advanced rendering techniques to deliver faster and smoother animations. Vivo also mentions that OriginOS 6 will offer a smooth scrolling experience throughout the interface.

The changes further expand visually with new app icons featuring a circular design and progressive blur in the notification shade. Vivo has also borrowed Apple’s Dynamic Island to offer interactive notifications directly through the camera cutout.

The update also brings Circle to Search 2.0 to all devices, which uses Google Gemini to analyse any information on the screen and generate precise responses. Other nifty features include an AI phone assistant, an AI summary, and photo editing tools.

Vivo’s Big Bet on OriginOS

Vivo has aced the hardware game in the smartphone industry with impressive cameras under its Zeiss partnership. The company’s iQOO lineup also offers one of the best gaming performances using custom Q-Series performance chips. However, enthusiasts and general consumers have always complained that Funtouch OS was holding back their phones from reaching their true potential.

Although Funtouch evolved into a stable OS over the years, it often lacked the refinement that you would expect from a flagship or top-end phone. Samsung faced similar issues with its TouchWiz UI, and the company replaced it with OneUI in 2018, which has been a good success.

Similarly, Xiaomi recently replaced MIUI with HyperOS to introduce better AI feature integration with other ecosystem products. So far, HyperOS has received positive feedback, and customers are liking it over MIUI.

This does not mean that TouchWiz and MIUI were bad. They were decent, but as time changed, the technology evolved. There’s only so much we can improve with incremental updates. Beyond a certain point, it is better to start something from scratch, instead of trying to fix something broken.

It looks like Vivo has realised the same for its Funtouch OS, and its new OriginOS is expected to provide a massive boost in refinement and improve end-user experience. A successful rollout of OriginOS could give OnePlus, Samsung, and all other brands in the market a run for their money, given Vivo’s current expertise in hardware.
