Google is ready to launch new Pixel smartphones and smartwatches at an event next month and if a fresh report is to be believed, even the new Android 14 version will also arrive on the same day. As we continue to wait for both announcements, Google has now refreshed its Android branding with a new logo and 3D bug droid. Both these changes will start to appear across Android devices and other places starting this year.

Android Gets New Logo and 3D Bugdroid

The first change is coming to the Android logo which we get to see almost everywhere including the boot screen of Android devices. The most noticeable difference is that the new Android logo has a capital “A” instead of the previously used lowercase “A”. Google says this will add more weight to the logo’s appearance when placed next to the Google logo.

The team has further made changes to the Android logo typeface. It now resembles the Google typeface more closely but is still not identical. The new visuals are said to have been inspired by Material design. The overall thought process behind the new Android logo changes is to bring it in line with Google’s brand language and identity.

Jason Fournier, Director of Android Consumer Brand Management said, “We hope these small but significant updates to the Android typeface will better communicate the relationship between Android devices and the Google apps and services people already know.”

As for the beloved Android robot, Google has refreshed the bug droid with a 3D look that makes it look more adorable. The change surely makes the bugdroid feel more alive but its overhaul goes beyond adding depth. Its full-body appearance has also been refreshed for a more dynamic and playful feel. Google says its new look “can easily transition between digital and real-life environments, making it a versatile and reliable companion across channels, platforms and contexts.”

If you are wondering when you can see the new Android logo and 3D bug droid around, Google revealed both these changes will start to appear this year. We should undoubtedly be seeing both of these making an appearance with the Android 14 release.

This is the first Android brand refresh since Google did it last time in 2019. The biggest change from that time was introduced to the naming scheme. It decided to drop dessert names for the new Android versions. This is the reason Android 9.0 was the last version to be named after a dessert i.e. Android Pie and we have received simple names like the current version Android 13. Google said this makes it easier for anyone to know which one is the newer version.
