OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is gearing up to strengthen its ties with India’s tech community. In a recent announcement at the ET Now Global Business Summit, Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, revealed plans for multiple developer summits across India.

OpenAI’s Plans for India

The company’s vision includes hosting several developer summits across India this year, providing a platform for collaboration between Silicon Valley developers and their Indian counterparts. Kwon envisions this cross-continental collaboration as a catalyst for building cutting-edge tools that will shape the future of AI.

Kwon is optimistic about India’s potential in AI, citing its status as home to the world’s largest developer community and top-notch talent.

He pointed out India’s knack for developing standout tech businesses and its global competitiveness.

India is the Second Largest Market for ChatGPT

ChatGPT is popular in India, but until now, we didn’t have any solid numbers to back it up. However, Kwon has revealed that ChatGPT boasts a staggering 180 million users globally, with India emerging as the second-largest market, contributing 9.08 per cent of the total user base. This means India accounts for nearly 16.344 million users.

This is not surprising given India typically is a large market for most tech companies. Already several use cases of ChatGPT are being explored in India. Students use it to complete their assignments, coders use it to test or debug their codes, and employees use it to write boring formal emails or create their resume or cover letter while applying for another job.

ChatGPT is Getting Smarter

As the company establishes its tech community in India, ChatGPT is evolving with the addition of new features, enhancing its intelligence. A recent inclusion is a memory feature, enabling ChatGPT to recall previous conversations for more informed future interactions.

This functionality is presently undergoing testing with a limited group of free users, with a gradual rollout scheduled for this week. Although a wider release is not on the immediate agenda, OpenAI assures that more details will be communicated soon.
