Google and Samsung Showcase Android XR Smart Glasses Powered by Gemini at I/O 2026

Samsung and Google have unveiled new intelligent eyewear at Google I/O 2026, offering the first official look at AI-powered smart glasses developed in partnership with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

At the Google I/O, it was communicated that the new eyewear is designed to serve as a companion device for smartphones, allowing users to access Gemini-powered assistance via voice while remaining hands-free. The glasses are positioned as part of Samsung and Google's broader Android XR push.

Gemini Powers Navigation, Translation, and Everyday Assistance

Samsung and Google showcased several Gemini-powered features integrated directly into the eyewear experience.

Users can ask Gemini for navigation assistance through voice commands, receive suggestions such as nearby coffee shops during walks, place pickup orders, check notifications, and add events to calendars without taking out their phones.

During the launch presentation, they highlighted real-time translation capabilities, including audio translations that match the speaker's voice, alongside visual translation for text appearing on menus and signs within the user's field of view.

Samsung says the eyewear is designed to work seamlessly within the Galaxy ecosystem, while also supporting tasks such as capturing photos directly through the glasses.

Gentle Monster and Warby Parker Designed the First Styles

The first intelligent eyewear designs are being created with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with both brands bringing distinct design approaches to the platform.

Samsung describes Gentle Monster's styles as "disruptive yet refined," while Warby Parker's approach focuses on more timeless and classic eyewear aesthetics. The companies repeatedly emphasized comfort, wearability, and familiar eyewear styling during the announcement.

This also marks one of the clearest signs yet that Samsung and Google are positioning AI eyewear as a consumer-focused category rather than an experimental developer concept.

Samsung Says Intelligent Eyewear Is Part of Its Broader AI Vision

Jay Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience Office, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said the new form factor represents an important step in Samsung's AI strategy.

Google's Shahram Izadi, Vice President and GM of Android XR, described the collaboration as part of a broader effort to make AI more accessible and useful in everyday life through hands-free experiences.

The announcement also ties into Google's broader Gemini-focused announcements at I/O 2026, where the company detailed how AI is becoming increasingly integrated across Search, Android, Chrome, YouTube, and Workspace.

Launch Expected Later This Year

Samsung and Google confirmed that the first intelligent eyewear collections are scheduled to launch this fall in select markets, with more details expected in the coming months.
