Sony BRAVIA 7II Brings True RGB TVs to India as Premium TV Battle Moves Beyond Mini LED vs OLED

Sony India has launched the BRAVIA 7II series in India, introducing its new "True RGB" backlight technology to the premium television segment. The lineup combines independently driven RGB LEDs, Cognitive Processor XR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, gaming-focused HDMI 2.1 features, and Google TV with upcoming Gemini integration.

The launch comes at a time when the premium television market is rapidly shifting beyond the traditional OLED versus Mini LED conversation. Buyers spending above Rs 2 lakh are increasingly focusing on real-world viewing factors such as HDR brightness, glare handling, colour accuracy, gaming responsiveness, and viewing-angle consistency instead of simply comparing panel technologies on paper.

Sony appears to be positioning the BRAVIA 7II as a television that attempts to combine OLED-like colour richness with the brightness advantages typically associated with Mini LED displays.

Sony's True RGB Technology Tries to Solve One of Mini LED's Biggest Problems

The biggest highlight of the BRAVIA 7II is Sony's new RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro technology. Unlike conventional Mini LED televisions that primarily rely on white LEDs and colour filters, Sony's new system independently controls red, green, and blue LEDs directly.

According to Sony, this allows the television to improve colour precision, reduce blooming, deliver deeper blacks, and maintain better brightness control across complex HDR scenes. The company is also combining this with RGB Triluminos Max and Luminance Booster technologies, which aim to improve overall colour volume while retaining high brightness output.

This is particularly important in brighter Indian living rooms where OLED televisions can sometimes struggle to maintain perceived brightness during daytime viewing. Most of our houses have natural light and direct sunlight falling on the TV, which makes it difficult to watch the TV even with the curtains drawn.

To counter issues like this and more, Sony is also introducing a new anti-glare and reflection-focused screen approach on the BRAVIA 7II, further reinforcing the company's focus on practical living-room viewing conditions instead of purely showroom-oriented picture tuning.

Sony Is Increasingly Positioning BRAVIA Around Cinematic Accuracy Instead of Pure Brightness Wars

The BRAVIA 7II continues Sony's long-standing approach of prioritising cinematic image processing and creator-intended picture quality. The TV is powered by Cognitive Processor XR, which handles real-time scene analysis, contrast optimisation, motion clarity, and upscaling.

The television supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and IMAX Enhanced formats. Sony has also included Studio Calibrated Modes for Netflix, Prime Video, and Sony Pictures Core to automatically optimise picture settings based on the content platform being used.

While brands such as Samsung, TCL, and Hisense are aggressively competing around higher brightness figures and dimming zones in the Mini LED segment, Sony's strategy appears more focused on balanced cinematic performance, colour consistency, and natural image reproduction.

The company is also pushing audio performance as a differentiator. The BRAVIA 7II gets Acoustic Multi-Audio+ on 65-inch and larger variants, along with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Voice Zoom 3, AI Sound Separation, and 3D Surround Upscaling.

Gaming Features Are No Longer Optional in Premium TVs

Sony is also treating gaming as a core premium TV requirement instead of a secondary feature set. The BRAVIA 7II supports 4K 120Hz playback via HDMI 2.1, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Dolby Vision Gaming, and dedicated PlayStation 5 integrations.

Features such as Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode continue to strengthen Sony's broader PlayStation ecosystem integration strategy.

The TV also includes Game Menu 2, allowing users to quickly access settings like black equaliser controls, motion blur reduction, and crosshair overlays during gameplay.

Large-screen gaming is becoming a much bigger purchase driver in the premium TV category now, especially as console gaming adoption and high-end PC gaming setups continue to grow in India.

Google TV and Gemini Reflect the Growing Push Towards AI-Driven Entertainment

The BRAVIA 7II runs Google TV and supports Google Assistant, Apple AirPlay 2, Apple HomeKit, Google Cast, and Alexa-enabled devices.

Sony also confirmed that Gemini integration for Google TV will arrive later through an over-the-air update, bringing more natural AI-powered voice interactions and personalised recommendations to the television experience. This reflects a broader industry trend where television brands are increasingly positioning smart TVs as long-term AI-enabled entertainment hubs instead of standalone display devices.

Much like the other Bravia TVs, this one too will come bundled with access to Sony Pictures Core, including 10 movie credits and Pure Stream support with streaming bitrates of up to 80Mbps for higher-quality movie playback.

Who Is the Sony BRAVIA 7II Really For?

The BRAVIA 7II appears targeted at premium buyers who prioritise cinematic image quality, HDR brightness, glare management, and large-screen immersion over aggressively value-focused pricing.

It also seems particularly suited for users who:

  • watch a lot of HDR movies and OTT content
  • have bright living room environments
  • want flagship gaming support alongside movie performance
  • prefer Sony's more natural colour tuning over highly saturated showroom-style visuals

At the same time, Sony may still face strong competition from aggressively priced Mini LED televisions from brands such as TCL and Hisense, especially as the gap in raw hardware specifications continues to narrow across the premium TV market.
