  • The feature will be implemented under cooperation between the PMC and Google.
  • Pune will be one of the first cities in India to take this initiative in road safety.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has announced that it will share the data of the location of all the speed breakers in the city with Google Maps. This will help citizens to control their driving speeds accordingly preventing a bumpy ride.

The decision was taken during a recent meeting where the PMC discussed measures to improve road safety in Pune. Let’s have a look at how the city is planning to work together with Google Maps to make people aware of speed breakers.

As per reports, Pune has over 2500 speed breakers. While these breakers are deployed to prevent citizens from overspeeding in certain areas, they are often found to cause accidents due to less visibility and various other factors.

Hence, PMC has decided to share the exact location of every single speed breaker in the city with Google Maps. Users will be warned of upcoming speed breakers by the app, which is expected to give them enough time to react and slow down their vehicle.

The PMC says that most normal citizens, cab drivers, and other ride-sharing services use Google Maps. Furthermore, many of the modern cars come equipped with a GPS or similar maps system. By harnessing this technology, the PMC aims to prevent rocky rides and accidents that are caused due to speed breakers.

As the announcement becomes official, we can soon expect Google Maps to warn people of speed breakers during an ongoing ride, just like how it prompts us ahead of an upcoming traffic ham toll plaza, sharp turn, etc. However, the PMC or Google have not shared an estimated timeline for the implementation and release of this feature.

To recall, Google Maps recently introduced five new features in its app, specially curated for India. These include address descriptors, which will show relevant landmarks using machine learning when you search for a specific location. Google Maps is also bringing features like Live View Walking and Google Lens integration into its app.

As Pune becomes one of the first cities in India to show the location of speed breakers in Google Maps, we can expect more cities to get inspired by this move. Metropolitan regions such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, and more could highly benefit from this, as speed breakers are often risky if went unnoticed at high speeds.
