Vivo Y20 features 6.5-inch display and the hardware is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage that is further expandable. It comes triple rear cameras that is decent for the price and a reliable selfie camera. But more importantly, the phone gets 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging speed. However, the screen resolution and hardware on board are a big downer for the price and with the existing competition.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 offers the best display, camera quality, software experience, and battery life in its segment. However, its super-slow performance is a huge letdown. The device feels so sluggish that at a point you don’t care about the positive bits of the device; you just feel like throwing it away for its poor performance. In spite of many class-leading features, I’d suggest you go for Xiaomi or Realme smartphones in the segment, which may not offer features as good as that of the Galaxy M31 but they get your work done and offer tremendous reliability.

Realme 8 is the latest addition to the mid-range segment. This phone gets a Super AMOLED screen, powered by Helio G95 chipset and runs on Android 11 OS. It features a 64MP quad camera at the back and the overall design makes it easy to use with one hand. You get long backup with the built-in battery that supports 30W fast charging. However, the screen lacks high refresh rate support and this variant comes with 4GB RAM only.

The Realme 7 Pro comes with meaningful upgrades over its predecessor, Realme 6 Pro, in terms of an AMOLED display, fast charging, and stereo speakers. On the other hand, the device has cons in the form of a smaller display with only a 60Hz refresh rate and an ultra-wide-angle camera. It is certainly not the best device in this price segment.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Max features a bright and large display, packs the Snapdragon 720G chipset, which is good for the price and comes with quality set of rear cameras. It also offers over a day's battery life with the 5,000mAh battery that charges in quick time with the support for 33W fast charging. However, at this price, the phone's screen does not support 90Hz refresh rate and MIUI software still has a lot of bloatware. Still, the phone is a decent bet for the mid-range segment.

OPPO F19s faces tough fight in the market, even though it gets a compact design. The hardware is average for the price, so are the main cameras at the back. You get AMOLED screen but lacks high refresh rate support. It get 6GB RAM by default with 128GB storage which can be expanded further. Android 11-based ColorOS fares well and the battery life should satisfy most users, especially with its 33W fast charging support. Loses out to better options in the market for us.

Poco X3 Pro is the ideal mid-range phone in the market for power-hungry users. It has pretty much everything you need. Big screen with support for 120Hz refresh rate, Android 11-based software, decent cameras on both sides and IP rating for splash-proof resistance. You also get long battery backup with 33W fast charging supported. However, the only drawbacks are hybrid storage slot and a bulky design can be uncomfortable to use. Poco X3 Pro is a definite choice for buyers.

Moto G40 Fusion packs decent specifications in the sub-20,000 category. The smartphone has a wide display with HDR 10+ certification, impressive triple-rear cameras (64MP+8MP+2MP) offering excellent image quality, offers ample space thanks to its expandable memory support of up to 1TB. The Vivo Z1x is a result of Vivo correcting the mistakes it did with the Vivo Z1Pro. The company has now used an AMOLED screen instead of an LCD panel, an under-display fingerprint reader instead of a rear-mounted one, a 48MP camera instead of a 16MP one, a USB Type-C port instead of a microUSB port, and improved fast charging speeds. The phone now has fast performance, bright and clear screen, good set of cameras, and long battery life. The only area we wish it was better at is the software design. FunTouch continues to be feature-rich but it needs to learn how to look good and behave well, and not mimic iOS’ design.

The OPPO Reno2 Z has a great set of cameras, and it looks uber stylish, but it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to performance and software. The combination of a notch-less AMOLED screen, Dolby Atmos audio, and 3.5mm headphone jack offers immersive media consumption experience and the phone lasts long on a single charge. The Realme 6 Pro brings the features that we are used to seeing in the upper mid-range smartphone to the lower mid-range price bracket. The quad-camera setup at the rear, especially, is a show stopper. It features a 64MP primary camera, something that even the flagships like OnePlus 8 don’t offer, a proper telephoto camera, which I think is the first in the segment, and an 8MP ultrawide sensor. The front camera setup is no slouch; you get a 16MP main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide unit. Then comes the silky-smooth 90Hz display, a first in the segment. And to drive the screen, the powerful Snapdragon 720G SoC. To top things off you get the fastest charging in the segment – 30 watts – to quickly recharge the large 4300mAh battery pack.

Realme 8 Pro 8GB RAM ships with a power-packed specs sheet. The phone sports a great Super AMOLED display, powerful 8GB RAM and 128GB internal memory. The quad rear camera setup featuring a 108MP primary camera accounts for excellent photography. The other notable features include a 4500mAh battery with 50W SuperDart charging and Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G octa-core processor. On the downside, the phone does not have any glass protection, and it has only a 60 Hz refresh rate display. Overall, the device is a worthy option to consider.

The Xperia XA1 Plus is yet another camera-focussed device from Sony. Except for its high-end 23MP rear camera, the phone does not have a worthy hardware.

The Vivo Y73 2021 comes with a LCD display. The device offers decent hardware performance, considering that it is equipped with Helio G95 SoC. The phone sports a 64MP primary main camera. The device offers 33W fast charging support. However, note that the Y73 comes with a LCD panel, and it packs a 4000mAh battery. If the display panel and battery life aren't a concern for you, then you should get the Y73. The other option in this price range you could consider buying is the iQOO Z3.

Nokia 5.4 is a good looking device with a strong build quality. But the big screen only supports HD+ quality at this price, which is not acceptable. The octa-core chipset with 4GB RAM will offer basic performance and nothing besides that. The 64GB onboard is expandable but the triple rear cameras are there to make the numbers, quality in the other sensors is lacking. The selfie camera does a decent job but we would have liked more than 4,000mAh battery on board. This device has to face stiff competition from Chinese brands at this price range.
